Security of stuff left in tent.

Just wondered if anyone has ever had any problems with stuff getting nicked out of your awning or tent.

Do you just leave everything in the tent/awning when you go out for the day?

I would probably put the microwave and TV in the van. (I am not a hard core camper, hence the camping van ).

camping with a microwave and tv lol

UnderRated · 19/03/2008 01:24

Oh Scramble, your post made me laugh!

But yes, I leave things in the tent. I never take anything valuable and almost always takes my wallet (or important stuff out of it) with me. The only other valuable thing I have is my camera which is usually with me.

I've never had any problems. I don't have a microwave or TV in my tent though

Scramble · 19/03/2008 01:29

None of this roughing it FGS, thats why I will have the van (semi camper) for me to sleep in, the kids will be in the awning (guarding the microwave). Ok I might just take the laptop and watch DVD's on that once kids are alseep and it is just me and the wine for company.

Hmm micro is a combi so I will even be able to do roast chicken for sunday lunch .

lol Scramble. And there's me, squished in a tent, struggling to warm a tin of beans and squinting at my book as the tilly lamp burns out. It's a different world in a van, isn't it?

UnderRated · 19/03/2008 01:32

Meant to do a or or something.

Fillyjonk · 19/03/2008 06:31

was going to say

"no, your torch and socks will be fine"

but lol at taking a microwave and tv

aside from camera and wallet, yes I leave stuff in the tent

No19 · 19/03/2008 06:40

If you have a van makes sense to lock things up, but I think baddies would choose your van full of electrical goodies over our securely zipped tent full of yesterday's socks and half-loaves of bread!

Expelliarmum · 20/03/2008 16:49

Put your waterproof somewhere safe! Especially if it is a chav-magnet! (Berghaus or similar label!)

Scramble · 20/03/2008 22:29

Did have a bergause but sold it to a chav on ebay for loads £££££.

We will be driving about in the van and parking in towns etc through he day I suppose anything expensive could be covered up in the back. I'll just leave the smelly camping gear inthe tent then .

I did wonder in general though if anyone had ever had a problem with finding tents had been rifled through. MIl leaves her micro out in her caravan awning and finds the very idea that some one might nick it shocking and ridiculous, according to her things like that don't happen on caravan sites, well not caravan club ones anyway,

Campers are, by and large, a pretty trusting and trustworthy lot -- the only time I have ever heard of theft from tents is at festivals (I know someone who had her stuff nicked from her tent while she was asleep in it, at Bestival).

Kbear · 20/03/2008 22:33

I don't leave my money in the tent but apart from that I leave the lot. It's kind of a rule of camping that you don't nick anything from other campers. I know someone else could come in and steal but not very likely. I suppose it does happen but I don't worry about it or I wouldn't go camping.

And I'm a Londoner who locks the back door if I go upstairs! ha ha

RubberDuck · 20/03/2008 22:34

You should probably leave them in the van (if it's a caravan rather than a motorhome type thing then hitchlock/wheel clamp combo is fairly essential to stop people swiping the actual 'van - far more valuable than your telly ) rather than the awning.

I take with me (or lock securely in the boot of the car) my camera when we go camping as it's a fairly good one. But then I have a folding camper so no decent lock on the door for us

Solitaire · 20/03/2008 22:35

No-ones ever nicked anything from our tent, but we're not posh enought to have a microwave or TV in it . I don't think my camping stove has quite the same allure

RubberDuck · 20/03/2008 22:35

But no - never had any issues with having stuff rifled through and never heard of anyone else having any issues either (other than at festivals as has already been said).

RubberDuck · 20/03/2008 22:36

Have heard of lots of caravans being nicked though (but not really from on site - more from in front of house/off storage sites)

Scramble · 20/03/2008 22:42

Oh I know all about festivals, they even nick whole tents full of stuff, empty it out and dump the tent.

Can I just clarify I have a just bought campervan, well a camping companion van . I am not a blinking caravaner , well I had a tidgy caravan last year, but exempt from being a blinking caravaner as I was given the caravan and I only used it for work, honest .

Its not the other campers I would worry about its if the local chavs are in walking distance and out looking for bergaus jackets or shiney microwaves LOL.

I stayed at a campsite in Dorset last year and the local shopkeeper told me that the year before some travellers had turned up on the campsite in the middle of the day and gone through every unattended tent and taken loads of stuff like sleeping bags, stoves, clothes.

Doormouse · 22/03/2008 16:33

Have never had stuff nicked from our camper van or tent - but I did have my bike pinched whilst staying on the Isle of Wight- it was locked up and we were on a well respected site . So I'd make sure you put VERY strong locks on any bikes if you take them. That was the first (and only) incident in 9 years of camping though....
Incidentally, I was in floods of tears when I noticed the bike had gone - I later found out it was 'cos I was PG with DS

Peachy · 22/03/2008 16:44

Never had anything taken, but then we're not the type who take electric hook up so not sure what anyone wuld want.

There were a family on one site alst year who ahd separate tent for their PC set up () which never seemed to be at risk, although it was a fairly secure site.

Scramble · 22/03/2008 22:19

at a tent for their PC.
