Static caravan - Seasonal or long term rent for holidays (not living)

Does such a thing exist?

Most places I’ve looked at push hard to either sell you one or have legal/licensing rules of no longer than one month stays – which I wouldn’t want to do anyway.

I’m looking for a setup where I can come and go to as I please at short notice because it’s “mine” for the duration. Eg. Long weekend – just nip up to the caravan. Week off – just nip up to the caravan. That sort of thing. Leave a capsule wardrobe there, etc. so no packing needed beforehand – just jump in the car and go!

In my mind, the site/company would have my guaranteed rent for the duration so it’s not as if they’d be losing money if it was “sitting empty” for a week or two at a time.

Am I missing something here or is there a gap in the market?

We have one that we own outright. On its own on a rented plot. We come and go as we please, year round.

DatingDinosaur · 31/08/2023 12:13

Ahh, it's the owning outright that I want to avoid.

Thank you for replying though.

Where have you searched? If you Google seasonal lets/long term lets there are some hits to give you an idea. Also self-catering holiday websites have specific searches that might help. I would imagine it's quite expensive though.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 31/08/2023 12:23

Have you thought buying a tourer and keeping it on a seasonal pitch?

Ohmylovejune · 31/08/2023 12:32

I'm.not quite sure what you are looking for.

There's obviously holiday rentals. You don't want that.

Then you can buy a van to come and go as you please but you never own the pitch and pay a service change for renting the pitch. You don't want that?

I suspect you do want the latter but don't want to pay the price or take on the depreciation. Whilst I understand that from yoir perspective, it makes less and would be more hassle for the site owners, so I'm.not sure why they would see it as a gap in the market unless, perhaps, they struggle to sell units - which down here they don't seem to!

As others mention, you could opt for a more economic option of buying a tourer to site. Then you could move it if you wanted to try a different place. It would allow you to.come and go and also keep all yoir personal bits in one place without constantly packing.

We had a big tourer & left it year round on a seasonal pitch. We never towed.

Season was April 1st to end of October. Suited us fine. Just paid annual pitch fee, electric & water but that steadily increased ++

Static caravans are a huge money pit. Annual fees, limited season but usually longer than six months stretching into January. Have to remove it after so many years, usually ten/13 even if it still looks brand new and well looked after. That’s a real issue. You’d have to pay removal fees to get it off site which is massively expensive & then what do you do with it?

Some sites don’t let you rent it out and even if you do, who wants strangers using it?

Read the small print very very carefully. There are lots of money spinning catches to the advantage of the site owners. Buyer beware. Do your research thoroughly. Visit some sites, talk to owners of statics, not just the estate owners.

@whatsappdoc I’ve had no joy at all with searching seasonal lets. It just brings up seasonal pitches to put your own caravan on (static or tourer). Either that or self catering holiday cottages/apartments that can’t be booked for longer than a month’s duration.

@Blinkinbloodyhayfever and @Stratocumulus Yes, I’ve considered that but ultimately don’t want to own outright (either a static or a tourer). I’m debt/loan/mortgage free and I don’t want that sort of financial commitment again. Nor the upkeep/maintenance if I’m truly honest. I wouldn’t want to sub-let/rent. I want a bolt-hole. I’m not looking to make money from this.

@Ohmylovejune What I would like is to rent a pitch with a caravan already on it for something like 6 months to a year. After which I can either hand the keys back or negotiate another 6 months to a year’s rent. As mentioned above, I don’t want to own either a pitch or a caravan outright. It’s not about the devaluation, it’s about remaining debt free and not having the hassle of maintenance or selling on, along with the convenience of being able to go there when I like at a moment’s notice.

I fear I’m looking for the holy grail here ☹

What about renting a little flat in a seaside town? That's the type of duration you're after.

DatingDinosaur · 31/08/2023 13:40

Now that has given me food for thought @sittingonacornflake . Sort of removing the "holiday" element from my search. Thank you.

The issue will be finding one to rent. Down here they are all on air b and b at high prices, although might do a deal for one long transcation..finding long term rentals is like looking for a needle in a haystack

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/08/2023 13:46

Could you go direct to Park Dean or similar? They have some of their own vans on their parks, they aren't all individually owned. They may be able to accommodate some sort of arrangement.

whatsappdoc · 31/08/2023 13:52

My first hit for 'Seasonal lets static' brought up this page. I'm sure there are more.

Ohmylovejune · 31/08/2023 15:42

What would your budget be?

You might find an owner that doesn't use theirs much but is tied in so happy to give a longer let so long as the site rules agree. Don't know where you'd find these people though as, if they aren't using it, why not sell? Perhaps if its just the one year they can't use it? Still don't know how you'd find them or if your budget would appeal.

DatingDinosaur · 31/08/2023 19:28

Ah, thanks all for the suggestions.

I’ve had a slight change of tack since the suggestion of renting (without the holiday element). It suddenly dawned on me that if I did something like that I could work from home there part of the week and be in the office part of the week. Just waiting to hear back from my boss to see if that is feasible.

@whatsappdoc Thanks! I’ve clearly been using the wrong words to search 😀

@Ohmylovejune Ironically, it was due to a friend of mine having a static caravan that didn’t get much use (so she let me use it for a nominal fee to cover ground rent) that got me thinking about this more seriously. Sadly the caravan was sold as part of divorce proceedings so no longer an option. I too don’t know where I’d look for something similar – maybe the Park Dean or similar suggestion by @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I might email them and see what they come back with.

My DD lived in a caravan for a while and the WiFi was rubbish. I don't know if that was because it was site WiFi or if the tin cans don't make signal very easy? Perhaps others will.know.

The 4G internet in our static is faster than our home fibre connection.
