Festival in the rain with kids

We're off to a family friendly music festival for bank holiday weekend with our 6 and 3 year olds.

We've paid for EHU and are taking a very small fridge. There aren't any washing up facilities, so we won't take a gas burner for cooking, but we'll probably take a kettle for hot water and drinks.
The closer we get to the weekend, the more rain is predicted! Light showers pretty much every day we're there. Most of the venues are under cover, so it'll be walking between and eating out when we're likely to get wet. We've got a wagon for the kids, but it doesn't have a roof or rain cover.
Any tips for surviving the weekend?

Accept that you are going to get wet!. I find much of how much weather affects camping is a mind set. Make sure everyone has waterproofs and an umbrella.

If you've EHU I would also recommend taking a small fan heater, this will help drying things out. Any one will do but check the rating of the EHU as I find normally you can only use it on the 1KW setting if you have other things plugged in as well.

@helpfulperson thank you for your reply and reassurance. We actually have the Kampa Diddy heater, I just never thought of taking it camping in August.

We're also taking the porch extension which we don't normally bother with, but that'll give us extra shelter. I just need to work out how to fit all the extra bits into the car and roof box!

We fashioned a cover for our wagon with bamboo poles and tarpaulin

Whatever you do keep your night clothes and bedding dry. As long as you can cosy up at night it's not so bad! Take plenty of spare socks for everyone. Cold wet feet is miserable. Peanut butter is handy for sandwiches and doesn't need to go in the fridge. No one will come to harm from eating mostly biscuits for a few days. Have fun, the weather might be better than you think!

Rain cover on the kids wagon is a must, we had water proofs like overalls from Muddy puddles not cheap but when they out grew them we got a good portion of the money back via Ebay. https://muddypuddles.com/

Take things like crackers, rice cakes etc and apples, etc for snacks. Pot noodles and cous cous that you just add boiling water to is easy. Make sure everyone has wellies and loads of socks. Also blankets. Can you get waterproof trousers for the kids?

You can still wash up! Just boil the kettle and use a foldable washing up bowl or a plastic crate that held eg bedding in the boot.

We've just unpacked from Camp Bestival!

Small foldable camping stools when ground is too wet for mats
Pop up beach tent - great to Chuck stuff in or for kids to play in - not waterproof but usually good for a shower
Waterproof mat to put bags on or under to keep them dry
Baseball hats help keep rain off your face
Ditto gloves but not woolly ones - sports type nylon ones also good for protecting hands when pulling trolley around
Bungees to strap stuff eg stools to trolley

Glo sticks
Festival glitter and facepaint
Small toys to play with on the mat - bubbles are good for this
Hand sanitizer mini bottles
Small packs of tissues
Ear defenders

Came back from a festival last week. No DCs with us but plenty there. Most were wearing puddle suits and wellies.

We were in a tent with no EHU and did loads of cooking and washing up - we camped for a week. Just take a w/up bowl and boil some water to add to cold water in the bowl. Job done. Friends took paper plates to cut down on washing up!

DeathStarCanteenGal · 21/08/2023 22:00

please don't take bubbles - they're not good for the waterproofing on tents
but maybe take some old cardboard and have it just inside your tent, then muddy boots can be left there

FusionChefGeoff · 21/08/2023 22:22

Bubbles are for the festival arenas not at the tents
