Camping food ideas for fussy eaters

Any suggestions for camping meals that work for fussy eaters?

My DS is normally 90% fed on beige food - he doesn’t like most “wet” or mixed food which puts paid to most camping staples like stews.

We normally camp for a weekend and we do pasta with cheese one night and hot dogs the next. But we’re going for a WEEK on holiday and even allowing for a couple of meals out I am struggling to think of 3-4 other dinners that he will eat.

We’ll just have a camping stove with 2 rings to work with (though it’s not too late to buy extra bits).

Super noodles, pot noodles? Porridge pots. Pasta. Rice?

What does he eat at hone? Do you mean things like chicken nuggets and chips?

Bemyclementine · 12/08/2023 17:41

We're just back from a week away, had bbq several times, steak, sausages, burgers, chicken kebabs, halloumi, etc. Bread, breadsticks, salads, couscous, crisps.

greenacrylicpaint · 12/08/2023 17:47

quesadilas
either pretty bland (ham & cheese) or more adventurous (e.g salsa & cheese, chicken&pesto& cheese)

Bemyclementine · 12/08/2023 17:49

Quesadillas are a goof idea, fajitas, but take the chicken out for him before and spice is added?

helpfulperson · 12/08/2023 17:52

I wouldn't worry about producing a different meal each night for him. Would he eat pasta and cheese and hot dogs on a rotation?

AppleKatie · 12/08/2023 17:55

Bbq

you can make different things for most people but make sure there’s a safe thing (hot dog/kebab whatever) each night for him. If you’re lucky he might try some of what everyone else is having with no pressure?

if in doubt weetabix backup 😂

Beetleback · 12/08/2023 18:03

Yes he eats a lot of oven food at home (chips, nuggets etc). He won’t eat rice or couscous unfortunately.

Quesadillas is a good shout and easily adapted for adventurous/bland tastes.

He likes BBQ food….Stupid question but how do you do BBQs at a campsite?

@Beetleback - disposable bbq? Check they are not banned at the campsite. Done campsites I've been to have had communal fire pits/bbqs to borrow.

W0MEN · 12/08/2023 18:07

Pasta pesto

Moltenpink · 12/08/2023 18:10

Most oven food works fine in a dry frying pan. You could dry fry oven chips and nuggets on a low heat over a camping stove, just check they are cooked through. Putting a lid over helps

Bemyclementine · 12/08/2023 18:20

Don't get a disposable bbq, they're shit. Get a snall camping bbq, or if you have electric hook up, a plug in griddle.

Kilopascal · 12/08/2023 18:25

When DS was little, his camping diet consisted of a rotation of
Fish fingers (just cook the whole box)
Ham and pasta
Bacon sandwiches
Cheese
Apples
Cucumber
Ready cooked roast chicken

I don't miss those days.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/08/2023 18:27

We did sausage rolls with a tin of beans one night this year.

ForeverYellow · 12/08/2023 18:31

My Ds is very similar. It is only for a week so don’t beat yourself up thinking he has to have a different thing every day . Cook what you and the others want and as a precious poster has said , rotate his safe foods. A pedestrian told me that sometimes it is just important to get the calories into kids .

ForeverYellow · 12/08/2023 18:33

Previous poster - oops sorry !

Kilopascal · 12/08/2023 18:35

Pedestrian = paediatrician?

oops again ! Sorry .

I’ve got a picky eater and when camping they often have hot dogs several nights in a row. Or bbq chicken in wraps. Or pasta in sauce. Lots of cheese sandwiches and fruit.

I figure if she’s happy it’s fine for a week.

sofapaddling · 12/08/2023 20:05

Are you getting an electric hook up? Because if so, take an air fryer! You can cook chips nuggets etc in there. If not? How about potato hash? Easily done in a frying pan. Or omelette

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 12/08/2023 20:06

Will you have electric hook up or access to a campers kitchen? If so could you bring an air fryer and you could do nuggets, chips etc.

Beetleback · 12/08/2023 21:08

No hook up sadly!

Am looking at some gas-powered griddle things, would open up more options

Tortellini is good. Instant mash, beans and sausage or cheese. Or real mash if you can be bothered. Burgers. We also do pamentier potatoes. Par boiled cubed potatoes which are fried. You can leave out the herbs.

Polis · 12/08/2023 22:07

We have a Cobb BBQ which actually works more an oven. They aren’t cheap new but we bought a hardly used one cheaply off ebay. You can get gas powered ones too.
