If you take duvets when camping

What tog do you take? I'm contemplating the switch but unsure whether to take 4.5tog summer or 10.5/13.5.

It depends on the season, just like at home. We are just about to set off and I have packed summer weight duvets. We do have a spare woollen blanket in case it gets cool overnight.

If we are camping when it’s going to be frosty, I take a summer and a winter weight duvet, and the blanket.

We take a decent weight duvet. It can be cold at night when camping! I have a thick blanket to go on top of the duvet too if I need it. I've never been cold and generally have a really good night's sleep.

I take the fairly lightweight IKEA ones as they roll up small and fit in nooks and crannies in the car. And machine washable. I think they're only 3.5 tog, but would usually have sleeping bags too.

arghtriffid · 26/07/2023 12:39

Winter ones. Kothing worse than being cold. I also take a blankets.

antidisestablishmentarianism · 26/07/2023 12:43

We take a 4.5 tog duvet all year round, then at least 3 fleece blankets, which we layer up as we need. The blankets are also useful for sunuggling under in the evening. It goes without saying that we have long sleeved pyjamas and fluffy socks! The thinner duvet is much easier to pack than a thick one.

The 3 blanket/duvet/pyjama/sock combo worked even in January with gales and snow! Loo trips were another matter of course!

I pack my duvets in vac bags - they shrink right down and take up next to no room.

gogomoto · 26/07/2023 13:10

10.5, it's colder than in your house

Radiodread · 27/07/2023 18:43

For summer up to early September I’d just take normal home duvets and a woolen welsh blanket in case. If it was forecast colder, I’d take a thicker one. Having said that we don’t sleep on the floor but on camp beds with SIMs on top.

lidolemon · 27/07/2023 21:27

I'm going 10.5! 😀 I can't see an imminent heatwave on the horizon and I would rather risk being hot than cold. I have been impressed with how well they squash down, as opposed to our big sleeping bag, if you place something on the top. Looking forward to the luxury.

We went at the weekend had 10.5 and didn't need the sleeping bags at all , we slept so well was lovely and cosy . Have a fun trip ⛺️

Helenahandkart · 27/07/2023 22:31

I recommend a thin duvet with a hot water bottle. That way you don’t wake up boiling in a stifling sunny tent.

mastertomsmum · 27/07/2023 22:55

Not been camping for years, triangular white tent for 2 friends, sleeping bags, pillows, groundsheet, long nightie, socks. I do recall that a cold visit to a caravan in student years involved accommodating someone’s duvet (only one person bought a duvet with them) on our laps on the passenger seat. Blankets were provided by the aunt who lent us the caravan

BunnyBettChettwynd · 27/07/2023 23:01

I take a 10.5 tog. After dinner I make a hot water bottle and put it in my bed, it seems to keep the evening air from making the bedding damp and by the time I go to bed everything is snug and warm.

Changingmynameyetagain · 27/07/2023 23:09

We take a 10.5 tog, I also have a sleeping bag and fleece blankets. I detest being cold, I usually put the sleeping bag under me and the end zipped up around my feet and then the duvet and fleece blanket on top, plus a hot water bottle.
I hate wearing clothes in bed, it makes me feel really claustrophobic so I wear a vest and shorts in bed and layer up the bedding instead.
I’ve never been cold, DH and I have separate bedding though so I can get myself comfortable, DH prefers to be a mummy in his sleeping bag and the duvet on top but no fleece blankets.

So if you take a duvet and shrink wrap it down, how do you shrink it back down at the end of camping?

antidisestablishmentarianism · 30/07/2023 12:58

@JustMarriedBecca you use your pump you used to inflate your air bed in reverse so it sucks. Or you get the family to sit on it.

Easy... with these bags!

I'm just back from camping - I have 4 vac bags: duvet and sheet, pillows, chunky blanket, sheepskin rugs. Each one takes less than a minute to vac down with the pump. Stuff goes straight back in the loft in bags (duvet/pillows are aired before packing) and bedding is washed at the end of each summer (max 4 trips of 2-3 nights - I have no qualms about that whatsoever).
