Fussy kid Meal ideas without fridge or elec

Help! I'm taking a very fussy child camping for four days.
Does anyone have any meal ideas which don't need refrigeration or electric. We will have a gas stove.
Thanks

It is hard to answer without knowing what the child's fads are.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 17/07/2023 17:24

It does depend on what they like.

Mine liked ritz crackers, or the kind of flour tortillas from the long life section of the supermarket.
Then primula cheese, or tuna mayo and sweetcorn

CarriePT · 17/07/2023 17:35

There's so many things he won't eat, I'm hoping maybe for ideas for meals which don't need a fridge then tweaking them to suit.

Anything from a tin that can be heated up or from a pot/packet that can be made with boiling water.
We used to buy things like Pain au chocolates in the plastic bags (from iceland etc) to have for breakfast/snacks because they don’t go stale.

toomuchlaundry · 17/07/2023 17:41

Maybe easier to say what they like

Needmorelego · 17/07/2023 17:41

So for example - tinned beans with tinned hotdogs. That’s a meal.

gogomoto · 17/07/2023 17:44

Tinned macaroni?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/07/2023 17:46

Does he like hotdogs? Hotdogs in a jar are good. Either in a bun or chopped up in tomato pasta sauce.

Baked beans.
Eggs.
Pre made crepe type pancakes for breakfast with fruit, choc spread, whatever.
You can get toasters for gas stoves, if thy helps. They're very cheap and work well.

SylvanianFrenemies · 17/07/2023 17:53

Hot dogs (from a jar).

Workawayxx · 17/07/2023 17:53

Pasta pesto (or with any stir in type sauce, could use pizza sauce if you wanted a non lumpy sauce)

Hot dogs made with tinned sausages

pizza or quasadillas done in a frying pan (needs cheese though but think it survives ok in a cool bag with ice packs for a day or two).

bread and peanut butter

spaghetti hoops and bread

Tin of beans (with sausages in if liked) and bread

Egg fried rice, with those microwave rice bags can be done in a saucepan

omlette

Egg in the hole - ds cuts a hole in a slice of bread, puts it in a frying pan with a little oil and cracks an egg into it.

apples and carrots do ok out of the fridge for a bit of fruit and veg!

Madcats · 17/07/2023 18:02

Pasta and a sauce?

Sausages, beans (or normal veg) and Idaho mash?

Could you freeze something and pop it in a cool bag for day 1 so that it is defrosting by the time you arrive? You could also buy those bags of microwave rice, but heat it quickly in a saucepan and a splash of water.

Wraps with cooked, breaded chicken and dips?

It is hard to advise without having a clue what the "fussy" DC might eat.

I have fond memories of our little stove top sandwich maker as a kid; I'd buy one in a flash for a camping trip!

toomuchlaundry · 17/07/2023 18:05

Can you use any of those camping meals that kids take on DofE walks?

OneHundredOtters · 17/07/2023 18:06

First day take something you have made in advance and frozen, put it in a cool bag and it will defrost in time for you to heat it up for dinner.

If you have a cool bag/box and ice packs that you can refreeze you can keep stuff cool for a couple of days- burgers, sausages etc and assuming you aren't going totally off grid you can always nip to a shop and top up.

Other ideas:

Pasta and passata. Or something with tinned tuna

Macaroni cheese

Carbonara

Dhal or another lentil based dish

This veggie chilli: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/burnt-aubergine-veggie-chilli/amp
(I often do this camping. Measure and mix all the dry spices and lentils before you go and then you just need to add the veg and stock etc)

Shakshuka

CousCous with halloumi

TheModHatter · 18/07/2023 09:42

What does he eat?
Then we can tweak camping alternatives.

GameOverBoys · 18/07/2023 09:50

Pasta and jar sauce
stuff in bread or wraps - peanut butter, chocolate spreed etc
Tinned soup
flavoured rice packets
packet or pot noodles
pot porridge
brioche
Or you could bring a cool box

PicaK · 19/07/2023 17:19

I gave up. Bought an oven which runs off the little gas cannisters. It was pricey but works brilliantly and means we can go for a week now.

Do you have a cool box @CarriePT and can you freeze the ice blocks whilst you're there?
