Tomorrow I am spraying my new awning frame! Bit nervous

I have to mask all the inside posts and stuff all the channels! Sounds rude!

I have sheets of hardboard to protect the space from paint

And a mask to protect me
And a friend coming to help

And then the really hard work of making the cover starts

Making a cover? Blimey, that will be hard work!
Have you looked on eBay for a second hand one that would fit your size frame? It might need spraying with re waterproofing spray but would be a hell of a lot easier that sewing unwieldy fabric yourself. (Although I’m judging you on my own skills 😂 you’ll probably have no bother!)

Are you spraying it the same fab colour as your van? I hope the weather stays dry for you. Have fun!

Skills? I have no skills, I am a competent bodger

It's green best colour 'not new' paint I could find 😊

It's a customer frame so....

It'll be fine - it's my second one!

KatyMac · 06/05/2023 12:45

Not quite sure about that but....

It's sprayed

Productive morning!

Touched up missed bits this morning!

Now I'm filling all my mannequins with expanding foam! It's a weekend of firsts

Bloody Hell. Jesus. You are seriously impressive OP.

Yesterday we drove down to Dorset, after 18 years of caravanning, during the Coronation we were clearing out and cleaning our Hobby caravan for sale.

We had 2 awnings. A big one and a porch. Dh lifted them into the boot of my car. They weigh a tonne.

For you to make one. Again. A 2nd is seriously impressive. And not much impresses me!

KatyMac · 07/05/2023 11:27

Yes but you are talking about huge tent awnings mine are just top covers

I'll put velcro round the sides and use the sides of the gazebo I have to enclose it when necessary

Did you see the picture I posted it's very rudimentary

Yes. It looks lovely. Is that you in your pink caravan, at a show/fete/where you have a stall? Running a business?

KatyMac · 07/05/2023 17:37

Yes selling upcycled clothes

The expanding foam was not fun! & I need to reload the caravan for an event tomorrow

It's all sprayed

I'll start making the cover on Wednesday as I have an event tomorrow and Tuesday I have acupuncture and some appts

Bit worried it will take ages to make; got a big event next weekend and another bank holiday weekend. I'm not worried about not having it done but about not working on other projects because of it

And I found this!!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=voAcaMJe9Rw

I was thinking about crenellations but I think they might be a bugger so straight or scalloped edges it is!!

I have waterproof seam sealant & waterproofing paint/stuff & very expensive marine grade eyelets

Gulp!

I Made An Awning for my Tiny Camper! // Vintage Camper Awning Tutorial

I needed an awning for my tiny vintage camper, and couldn't afford a custom one, so I decided to make one myself. LINKS:***Keder awning rope- https://www.sa...

Ok I never even got started! This is where my brain is

I cant make the whole thing at once so,

Initially, I'm going to make a rectangle about 3 inches bigger on each direction with 4 eyelets in the correct place

How many layers of fabric would you use to reinforce the eyelets?
I will need a second eyelet to pull down and attach to the weight & the cleat - where would you place that (see below)

At some point I will add a short vertical "frill/edge/pelmet" this could be a box - so sewn at the corners or 4 flaps?

Then either sewn to my roof (hence the extra round the edge) or maybe on eyelets of its own and bungee'd to the frame in a spiral?

Finally I have 2 sets of sides already one that velcro on and one that hangs on shower curtains, would it be OK to use the shower curtain ones if I sew the pelmet to the roof do you think?
