Weymouth

I'm thinking of Weymouth for our camping holiday this year. Does anybody have any suggestions on places to go, hidden gems, nice stretches of beaches and good camp sites? I have 2 DC 10 & 7

Weymouth itself has a nice beach, Durdle door, Lyme Regis and where broadstone was filmed are worth a visit. There’s a swannery at Abbotsbury along with a farm, which is all within nice walking distance from each other. Swanage is a nice lively town and front, with a really nice chippy.Monkey world if that would interest you. Practically there’s a sainsburys and morrisons in the centre of Weymouth, with lots of parking close together to get your essentials.

Thank you, that's really helpful. Do you know if the beaches are all pebbly in that area or are there some sandy ones too?

Weymouth town beach is sandy and very shallow so great for young kids. Your age can hire pedalo or kayaks off the beach, or even use an inflatable dingy. As you head east along the bay it becomes pebbles.

You can camp in the haven near Chesil beach, or there are a lot of campsites to the east. I've not stayed in them but when it's windy you are up on a cliff! On a sunny still day they look lovely.

The D Day museum in Portland is an absolute gem - you can actually touch the stuff and sit in the vehicles. Nothe Fort is quite good too to see the nuclear bunker. I'm not a fan of the sea life centre in Weymouth, but the go karts in the same car park are fun and yours are old enough to go solo in them. The cinema is great if the weather is wet.

further afield are Monkey world, Bovington tank museum, Corfe Castle and Knoll Beach near Studland (very national trust / middle class compared to Weymouth beach). In august you'll do well to get anywhere near Lulworth cove / Durdel dor. A boat trip to see if from the sea might be less stressful and is really nice.

The ones I mentioned are all sandy, chesil beach is pebbled mainly.

Was just about to comment this. Just got back from a weekend in Weymouth and it's great.
Durdle door is fabulous, quite a steep incline to get to and from it. Beaches are beautiful there, Lulworth Cove is 100% worth a visit too.

I live in Dorset about 30 minutes from Weymouth and the beaches at Weymouth and Swanage are best for kids (I have a 2 year old and we have nieces and nephews who come to visit between ages of 3 and 9 who all love both those beaches). I'll have a look at campsites and share some I think are best location wise :) you'll have so much fun!!

Are there any camp sites in walking distance of the main Weymouth beach and harbour?

Only the rugby club which they used to allow camping on fire a few weeks in summer. There are a few on the bus route to the east past Preston

We went a few years ago and stayed at the White Horse campsite - right next to the huge carved white horse in the slope. Lovely campsite, pretty basic as that’s what we like, eweleaze looked great fun but much busier. Might be handier with a shop and food options for you with little ones though - but white horse was brilliant for acres of space.

Great day trips -

Loved the Abbotsbury subtropical gardens. There were Alice in wonderland sculptures all over the place when we visited, and even if that’s changed, it’s a really nice place to wander around with kids. Great on a windy cool day too as it’s genuinely warmer and more sheltered than elsewhere!

Lyme Regis - lovely but massive honeypot busy town. Arrive EARLY. Can be a nightmare with traffic. But gorgeous. If they like fossils, there’s a spectacular ammonite pavement along the beach - park at Monmouth beach car park and walk along the beach towards “Lyme Regis fossil beach” but you have to go at low tide or it will be all covered. See pic attached.

Chesil beach and Portland are worth a trip -‘don’t try to walk along chesil beach but you can park next to it and walk up to the top to admire the massive bank of stones! There’s a sculpture place at the quarry on Portland as well which could be fun for kids to scamper around.

We had a few rainy days, so were grateful for the basic quick fun of the pirate adventure golf and the sand sculpture place next to the aquarium. There’s kids go karting as well. Sand sculpture place is really good!

Weymouth beach is great - large, lots of stuff for kids to do but just a good beach anyway. Lovely sand. I probably wouldn’t bother going over to swanage as well if you’re at Weymouth - both are great but might as well stay local.

Good local coast walks around Osmington, start and / or finish at the Smugglers Inn (book a table perhaps as it gets busy).

We like the sound of fossils, are there any good beaches for a good wonder around, do you know? We also have a dog, I'm hoping we will be able to take her most places.

Lots of fossil hunting tips in here - I am sure I’ve heard charmouth is very good. Also the Etches collection at Kimmeridge bay is small and excellent and has massive microscopes and handy helpers to help you identify your rocks and fossils.

The ammonite pavement is brilliant. And millions of fossil shops etc and Mary Anning statue in Lyme Regis.

Where is the best place to go fossil hunting near me in Dorset? There are plenty of great fossil beaches in Dorset waiting to be discovered

Talipesmum, thankyou so much. This is great and exactly the kind of the thing we want to do!

Charmouth is smaller than Lyme Regis and excellent for fossils. We did the guided fossil walk there last year and found some really interesting stuff.

The fort at Weymouth was quite interesting for a poke around. They were doing some sort of historical reenactment when we were there - firing cannons and so on.

icanneverthinkofnc · 17/04/2023 20:41

Higher Moor Farm campsite is lovely. You would need to drive or cycle to get to town easily, though. It's not over developed, very family friendly, and well run. It feels like going to visit family when we go there.

Fairylights7 · 17/04/2023 21:18

Don’t go to Portland, worst holiday we ever had (it was a covid era panic booking).

SleepHygieneHelp · 17/04/2023 21:45

I live just outside of Weymouth. What kind of facilities do you want for your camp site? I can try and advise then 🙂
