This may seem like an odd title but i was just curious really.

We love camping and try and do a few long weekends away during the May- September summer season. Mostly because they are cheap and cheerful (if you have the gear) and the Lake District (we go once a year) is so expensive nowadays for Air Bnb/hotel etc.

I also really enjoy a Parkrun if there is one nearby.

However on the flip side, i also love an all inclusive abroad which is the polar opposite of camping!

Anyone else tend to do the two extremes?

Would love a caravan but i just don't think we'd use it enough to warrant its use. Maybe when we're retired in 30 years 🤣

So far I've booked a long weekend over second May bank hol in Lake District- there is a tap and showers!, considering a weekend in York (need a Parkrun Y) and possibly Harrogate area to visit Fountains Abbey etc.

I've also booked a week at an IKOS resort🤣

Sort of as in we ski in the winter then have a long camping holiday plus a few weekend trips. But its the basic end of skiing rather than the fancy resorts.

usernotfound0000 · 06/01/2023 10:48

Yes! Although not so much luxury but I still need a week in the guaranteed sun!
We've only just got into camping so this year is our first full year. We are doing a weekend at Easter and a week in August. But we are also going to Italy for a week in May (not camping!)
I enjoy camping but I could never have it as my only holiday! But it certainly allows us to have more breaks due to the cost - a week in wales in august was less than £300! We would have paid 10 times that to go abroad.

usernotfound0000 · 06/01/2023 10:50

Oh and if you're looking for Harrogate, we've booked the Rudding park camp site.

rookiemere · 06/01/2023 10:53

Yes we do one or two camping breaks as DH has all the gear, but more to pad out holidays, rather than because I really enjoy it. I find the night time toilet issue problematic and only really want to do 2 nights maximum.

Last time we did it after a few nights in a really nice apart hotel and I didn't enjoy it, so I definitely need to go when we've not been on a break for a while.

CornishGem1975 · 06/01/2023 10:53

They used to when I could afford it but nope, 2023 is purely camping!

ivykaty44 · 06/01/2023 10:56

Definitely

last year my dd2 and I went all inclusive to cape Verdi and then I spent 6 weeks camping in September/October in France, Spain and Portugal under canvas

Fe2O3Girl · 06/01/2023 10:56

We don’t routinely take holidays abroad. Since our teenagers (14 and 17) were born we have had one trip to Oslo in Norway and we are going Iceland next month.

I view our summer camping as our main holiday but we usually have an autumn or winter short break in the UK in a log cabin.

We have never had an all inclusive holiday abroad.

flowerycurtain · 06/01/2023 10:57

We don't camp but we do have a caravan. When we holiday in that it's pretty basic - lots of hot dogs, packed lunches, time on the beach/walking/playing games.

In the winter we either ski or do a nice week in a hotel in this country. Love the luxury of not making breakfast etc!!!

That sounds like the dream! Definitely not enough annual leave to allow for that sadly

My baby is 1 so I don't need to worry about school holidays at the moment but i do anticipate us doing 1 week in June abroad
(in my borough schools have 2 weeks off for May half term so we'll go the out of season week for the rest of the UK) and camping in the main summer holiday for a week

Whilst the campsites are always busy with like minded campers, in my circle of friends camping is definitely not the holiday of choice

DreamingOfAGreenChristmas · 06/01/2023 11:12

Yes, we camp because we enjoy the whole camping experience (we cook over the campfire etc) and it gives us peace and quiet, out and about time.

But when we can afford it also have a holiday abroad. Never AI though.

YellowHpok · 06/01/2023 11:16

Yes! I live camping, going multiple times a year. Am also hoping for an expensive all inclusive holiday this year somewhere sunny with lots of sports.

NatMoz · 06/01/2023 11:16

To be fair, before baby we'd never done AI. My trips usually consisted of a base location and we would visit various places off the back of that.

Eg Stay in Sorrento and visit Positano, Pompeii, the volcano i can't spell, Amalfi etc but with our baby it's nice to put her in a creche for 3 hours while we go kayaking or paddleboarding and not have to worry about food etc

Yep we go camping ad-hoc in the summer when we fancy it and the weather is good, just for a night or 2. If we were planning to go and weather was bad we would just not bother. But I love going abroad and camping isnt in the same league for me. I need guaranteed good weather and new sights to see for it to feel like a proper holiday.

Funf · 06/01/2023 19:11

We where lucky and managed several cruises and Florida but we still went away in the caravan when ever we could kids loved it

zebrapig · 08/01/2023 10:06

Yes, we do. Main holiday is normally end of May/start of June as we have 2 week half term so take advantage of the cheaper prices to go abroad. Then we do a week camping in the summer holidays. Often do 1/2 long weekends as well. I'm just starting to look at campsites for the summer now.

ChatSamosa · 14/01/2023 18:51

Yes. I started camping so I could take breaks with my dogs without having to arrange dog care etc I have never seen so much of the UK since I started.

I also travel abroad a lot, mainly in the winter. Usually for upto 3 weeks (last big trip was Taiwan and Philippines)

Sadly my dogs are old and it's harder to leave them...so I've bought a caravan! Very excited to get further, out of season.

HareAndBear · 18/01/2023 19:23

Not since Covid but we did before - city breaks.

Yarrawonga · 19/01/2023 13:22

We tend to camp for last minute trips in the UK where we can’t get other accommodation, or don’t want to share accommodation.

We do other sorts of holidays too, both In the UK and abroad. We aren’t really “luxury” holiday people though.

MaverickGooseGoose · 19/01/2023 15:03

Yes we do a long haul 'fancy' read £££ in the summer but caravan / camping in uk for other holidays.

EspeciallyDetermined · 19/01/2023 15:06

Yes, I like camping and I also like going on cruises. Very different experiences!

Climbles · 19/01/2023 15:07

Yep, just organising our family holiday of a life time to Japan and our camping holiday in the peaks this year. We have also done eurocamp style holidays abroad in the past and love that. We don’t do the all inclusive luxury though, not because if budget just not really our thing.
