Camping somewhere scenic

We're a family of campers but have always gone 'comfort camping' - max 3 hr drive from London, big tent etc.
This summer I fancy pushing a bit further to go somewhere stunning. I'm thinking Snowdon, the Lakes or Yorkshire. I'd ditch the big tent and just take a couple of pop ups, as I can't face unpacking it all after a long drive.
I'd also like to try some walking (not done it for years and kids never done it. Youngest will be 10 and pretty hardy). Somewhere that offers guided family walks to get us started would be a bonus.
Any suggestions?

North Wales and the areas around Snowdonia are stunning
Personally we feel its better than the lakes as its generally dryer and has better beaches. You are never far from good food and a nice thing to see or do.
Some ideas here as much of it is around North Wales and Snowdonia

This camp site is excellent
gwynant.com
Its a short drive from Bedgelert ( Read about the dog) www.beddgelerttourism.com/gelert/

Castlerigg Hall in Keswick in the Lake District would get my vote. The view from the big field to play in is amazing. It’s a walk into the town (but there’s a bus) and some brilliant walks from the site. Food van comes every night and the facilities are excellent.

Amazing - thank you both! Contrasting views so I'll have to do some more research. DS is already getting excited about Snowdonia so maybe there this year and Lakes the following?

Bay Ness Farm in Yorkshire is good for family walks and has amazing views. The cinder-track footpath is just below the site and from the farm you can take a glorious walk down into Robin Hoods Bay, and we even made it to Whitby and back one day too. From Robin Hood’s Bay you can pick up part of the Cleveland Way and/or Coast to Coast route. It gets quite breezy, so I’d definitely recommend wind breaks.
Trwyn yr Wylfa is absolutely stunning. Doesn’t have many facilities - no shop or cafe - but in a perfect location for activities like Surf Snowdonia and Zip World, Bounce Below etc….

We really like The Quiet Site in Ullswater or Graig Wen in Wales. The Quiet Site has a lovely walk to Aira Force right from the site and is also close to Blencathra.

Fisherground campsite in Eskdale is in stunning surroundings. Lots of walks from the site and it’s also close to Scarfell Pike if you wanted a more challenging hike.

Catgill in Yorkshire is really pretty.

Tomb Raider motor bike scene was filmed next to the Gwynant camp site.
Some of the Gems often over looked

Near Betws y coed

Most people head for Swallow falls
But we feel these two are better

Fairy glen and The Conwy Falls Cafe does great food but you can walk behind it to see the water falls and a very steep river gorge.

If you venture to llandudno
Angel Bay you may see seals depending on what month it is

The Toll Road is an excellent scenic drive

Burns farm near Keswick has excellent views and facilities, which would be nice if you are camping in smaller units. They don't have EHU though for tents. A book like this shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/lake-district-short-walks-guidebook/ would be ideal for short starter walks.

Thank you for these great ideas. They'll keep us going for years!
The post Christmas blues just make me long for summer holidays and to be outdoors!

Me too! I’ve booked one campsite for summer already this week and have itchy fingers for 3 more!

UnfinishedBunting · 02/01/2023 22:03

Me three 😄 - I've booked a holiday, a weekend camping, and now I'm wondering about Christmas...

Nosecamera · 02/01/2023 22:05

The camping pods at YHA Windermere have an absolutely mind blowing view. You can take your own tents too, but the field is on a hill. The bell tents are very spacious but on the second row view wise.
Bare in mind that a pop up tent might not be up to the weather if you are heading to a wilder area.

Bumping as I am enjoying the thread

However seaview at Whitstable makes a nice weekend it's only open in the summer but is right on the beach and has a lovely sunrise and sunset

Plus you can wander into Whitstable for fish and chips

It is in a caravan park so as the entertainment there but is great for a weekend by the sea

There are so many lovely sites in the Lake District - my favourite area is Borrowdale, lots of great walks without having to drive and worry about parking. Stonethwaite campsite is very back to basics and cheap but in an amazing location, there aren't any showers but there is a section of the river within walking distance with crystal clear pools for swimming.

Yorkshire is wonderful. Especially the east coast. Flamborough, Filey, Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay.

I am northwest for North Wales is my easy go to. Anglesey is brilliant.

DreamingOfAGreenChristmas · 06/01/2023 11:29

OP, if you plan on hiking etc, I would reconsider the pop up plan.

Personally after a great day on the hills I like to be able to cook and arrange stuff without crouching and kneeling. And walking is always better after a good nights sleep! If you do get pop ups make sure they are not the single skin festival tents, unless you like condensation raining down on you!

What about downsizing your set up? No blow up sofas etc..

Or getting a smaller but standing height Weekend Tent?

How big and complicated is your tent?

Pootles34 · 06/01/2023 11:36

I agree with re-thinking the pop up tent idea. Especially if you want a view from your campsite - views normally come with lots of wind, especially sea views!

Brittany. Drive to Plymouth and camp a few spots on the way.
Plymouth to Brittany ferry overnight. Big adventure. Camp around Brittany area. Check Cool Camping for gorgeous spots inc beaches.
