If yes, how did you get on?

Seen it done a lot

I would never have trusted our cats to leave the 'van untethered as they would have just wandered off but I know some people do (reliable homing instinct required). More important on the day you are leaving, packed up ready to go and the cats have gone off wandering for the day!
Generally people put them on a lead when outside the 'van. They are free to wander inside but tethered when out.

We stayed next door to a van with 3 cats once. They all had GPS trackers. The guy said that it was great, but they could only do it because they were retired. They would have to wait until the cats came home to leave, so couldn't ever book a ferry. The first cat had been left at home once and was so miserable they took it along after that. The next two were street cats who moved in on them when they took the van to Italy Grin

We took one of ours away in a trailer tent on more than one occasion. He was fine. Also to our static caravan. His successor went there too. Neither had any issues.

Do you put a harness on the cat?

You would have to keep cat in van and be very careful not to let it escape because it may go roaming and not find its way back to van.

Yarrawonga · 16/11/2022 10:38

No, no harness. Just let them come and go.

It helps if you can be a bit flexible with your departure times! Also, we found that they are reluctant to cross open spaces in daylight so may wait until after dark to come home. Pitching close to a hedge will help.

No but friends of the family take their rather large house rabbit! Grin

We camp with our chicken. She doesn't go far. But will follow the children to the showers.

Dizzywizz · 16/11/2022 21:12

Omg @FeelWellEnoughToTellYou that’s amazing!

Oh this just sounds so, so stressful for the cats! And also a big risk they'd run away. Cats aren't like dogs. They don't enjoy holidays and adventures. They feel more safe in their own territory than with their owners in some random place. The cats would be much happier left at home with a cat sitter.

My husband’s parents have been taking cats with them on holiday since 1960. They haven’t lost a single one.

Soproudoflionesses · 16/11/2022 21:42

Couldn't imagine taking my boy out of his territory. He barely leaves our garden and l think he would find this quite stressful. But then l find camping stressful too!

MsMiaWallace · 17/11/2022 06:41

It's a caravan not camping

I think only you can judge. You know your cat. Does he/she mind travelling in the car? Ours were out exploring as soon as we let them out of the carrier rather than cowering under the car. The caravan will be “safe space” for it with a familiar layout and smells.

Also practicalities of litter trays, if you use them, in a confined space etc.

I suppose the litter tray could go in the bathroom or awning, if the OP has one?

greaterscott · 17/11/2022 21:50

I don't know why but this really made me LOL.

Diversion · 22/11/2022 21:29

I wouldnt take our boy in our bell tent, we would never find him for weeks but we do have camping friends who take theirs in their motorhomes without any issues, free roaming cats who wander around, climb the trees and often come and visit our tent.
