Please recommend a camping stove!

We're not new to camping but I'm having to build up our camping kit from scratch. Already got tent, mats, sleeping bags, table.

Since I last looked at stoves the options have widened and now I haven't got a clue which way to go:

Simple single campingaz cartridge stove x2

A double burner stove

Double burner plus grill

Or something like this? www.amazon.co.uk/Campingaz-Camping-portable-Barbecue-Tabletop/dp/B01B4WOJWC/?tag=which-digidip-21&th=1

The last one looks really cool but actually can only cook one method at a time and it's only one hob so doing something like pasta in one pan and sauce in the other wouldn't work but it's got great reviews so maybe I'm missing the point.

Any help gratefully received...

What kind of camping will you be doing?
One night? Wild? Lightweight? Weekends with a few people, family or longer?

I have a double burner camping gaz that has a grill option which we've never used.
We also have a basic one burner.

We do weekends at campsite that have fire pits with grill so cook on those and use he single burner for hot water etc.

The double burner we use for longer camps.

Also look at the gas you would use.

It'll mostly just be me and DD and will range from long weekends to ten days away on the continent.

It's a good point that many UK campsite seem to offer a fire pit nowadays but I doubt it's the same in the less touristy bits of France. Having said that a firepit is a bit faffy to be dealing with every day (we don't eat out much so tend to cook every day).

I like the simple gas cartridges as they're less scary than attaching a hose to a gas bottle (this might be something I just have to get over!).

Stuff the ones with the grill option - there's one (at go outdoors maybe?) that is a double hob with two flat plates that sit on the burners (one flat, one griddle). Some friends had it camping with us last week and it was brilliant, really easy to clean and fab for cooking. Theyve just used it for 3 months camping around France/Spain and it's passed that test!

The cartridges are actually a bit more daffy and prone to leaking......

Go for a double burner

Beamur · 03/09/2022 16:22

I'd go for a double burner if you need 2 spots. Otherwise, would you consider a trangia? They're very handy and portable. You can get gas powered versions too.

We have a double burner with grill in our trailer tent. The grill gets used at least once a day for toast. That is supplemented with a Camping Gaz cartridge stove if we need a third ring and/or a Coleman petrol stove if we want a very hot flame (stir fry’s etc.).

Funf · 06/09/2022 19:58

For many years we have used a Coleman twin burner petrol stove, it works in any weather no matter how cold and windy, fuel is cheap and easy to get
They will boil far quicker than any gas stove. Just take s a little practice but once you can work it its simple

id get an electric stove Like this or double

and buy electric hook up

ivykaty44 · 11/09/2022 13:12

Many continental camps electric is included, then you can charge phones, have light at night and cook easily

We have a trangia with a gas burner, and love it. We had it as a meths burner for years before switching to gas and would never go back to meths now as has is much cleaner.

I absolutely love the way everything needed packs down inside it, pans, kettle and all, so you can just sling it into a bag for a day out, or pack for a trip without thinking about pans etc. Just add a fuel canister (you can fit a box of matches in the kettle if you're crafty). It is very stable to set up, and won't blow out except in very high winds (suspect the meths burner is better for very windy and cold environments). The gas is not at all scary to connect. If you haven't got it screwed in hard enough it won't work at all. There is no gas escape when you attach the cannister; as easy as putting a lid on a thermos.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 11/09/2022 18:16

We have the one you've linked and have found it to be great. We make toast, eggs, roasted veg, all sorts on it!

INeedNewShoes · 12/09/2022 23:55

Thank you everyone for making suggestions. I've had a look at them all.

I like the sound of a double burner with a griddle on top but I'm struggling to find one with good reviews at the moment.

I'm not keen on using a hook up plus electric stove as it doesn't feel like proper camping to me! I'm hoping to avoid a hookup amongst lots of other camping clobber that I'm hoping to manage without. I went camping with a friend and it took hours to pack everything away. Even though I can see the use for all the various camping kit you can get I'm hoping to keep things a bit simpler otherwise it'll be overwhelming trying to pack/unpack etc.

@Climbingthelaundrymountain do you have another stove as well as this one or do you find there's enough space on it to cook different things in one go? Presumably you can't have a kettle/pan on it as well as stuff on the grill?

We’ve got one of the single cartridge ones. We love it. It’s so easy. Never had any problems with it in 15 years. We’re a family of 4 and it’s not really a problem to just have one burner - for pasta, I cook the pasta till nearly done, then take it off, pop it on the side next to the hob, leave in water to finish cooking while I heat the sauce up. Or I make the sauce first if I’m doing something nice, then put the lid on that, wrap a towel round it to keep warm while I do the pasta/rice/noodles. Can give the sauce a quick 30 second blast if needed. It’s dead simple to use.

We do have two smaller stoves, the kind that fit in those little suitcase type things. Think we got them from Halfords. We use them for the kettle or other things but use the big stove for most of the cooking.
