First trip - what will I have forgotten?

We are having our first camping trip at the weekend (kids 7 and 4). I think we've sorted all the initial basics, plan is to build up our stock over winter with more luxury stuff if the first trip is successful! So hit me with the things I haven't thought about that I will need? What things didn't you take on the first trip and wished that too had?

A doormat

usernotfound0000 · 29/08/2022 21:33

Ooh that's a good one! Especially as the weather is forecasting rain.

Lots of bin bags, not just fir the bin but to put muddy/wet clothes in.

BigSidLittleSid · 29/08/2022 21:34

Dustpan and brush
Pegs
Eye mask (unless you have a blackout tent, we don't)
Tin opener

ScratchyCat · 29/08/2022 21:36

Hand shovel and brush.
An electric (car) pump to fill airbeds and a hand pump to top up each night before bed as they deflate during the day and it's a pain to have to take to the car.

OiFrogg · 29/08/2022 21:36

Flip flops for the showers.

ScratchyCat · 29/08/2022 21:37

Head torch thingy

PuttingDownRoots · 29/08/2022 21:37

Slip on shoes for everyone.
Thick jumpers... or dressing gowns!
Extra blankets
Small games for inside the tent.
Umbrella
Bottle opener or corkscrew
Tin opener if you have tins to open
Washing up liquid, sponge and bowl

Check you can use all your equipment before you go
Check for quiet times on your campsite, especially the morning ones. 8am is common, but 7am in others. People can be a bit grouchy about children screaming at 6am for example.

INeedNewShoes · 29/08/2022 21:37

I nearly forgot towels on my most recent trip.

Extra blankets

Wool/walking socks in case the temperature drops sharply overnight

Flip flops to wear in the shower

WeCanBeHappyUnderground · 29/08/2022 21:38

Mallet
Extra tent pegs
Pump
Loads of socks
Tin opener
Corkscrew/ bottle opener if you drink
Instant snack/breakfast foods like cereal bars

SgurrNaCìche · 29/08/2022 21:39

Bottle opener / corkscrew
Pan handles
Wooden spoon
Washing up liquid / sponge

OiFrogg · 29/08/2022 21:39

Also a hat. I've just got back from camping and wished I had one in the evenings.

whiteroseredrose · 29/08/2022 21:40

We forgot the Mallet once. Fortunately other campers came to our rescue.

We once forgot the pillows but luckily DH was coming to us before bedtime.

We take blankets/throws for the evening, enough so that everyone gets at least one.

Earplugs - snoring travels far through tents

Washing up liquid

Slip on shoes for night loo visits

Fluffy socks for night time

Solar powered fairy lights to make the tent look lovely and easier to find in the dark

FusionChefGeoff · 29/08/2022 21:43

Thermos for saving excess hot water -
It takes forever to boil a camping kettle so don't waste any water

Hand cream - mine always get extra dry when camping

Glo sticks!

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 29/08/2022 21:45

Small notebook and pen. Every time there's something you wish you had brought on this trip, write it down. Then you'll know for next time 😁

gogohmm · 29/08/2022 21:48

Giggling reading this. We took ours backpacking, you learn to pack very light!

My top tip is crocs, invaluable

NotSoFlatStanley · 29/08/2022 21:48

Thermals, and change into them before you get cold and put your hats on.
We have a big clear laundry bag from IKEA for each person, can fit loads in and can usually tell who’s is who’s without having to rifle through loads of bags.
Portable battery charger
Definitely head torches
Bucket for night time loo visits

Have fun! We haven’t managed camping this year and I have missed it.

ShowOfHands · 29/08/2022 21:51

Scissors
Sharp knife
Tweezers
First Aid Kit
Baby wipes
Warm stuff - I like a woolly hat, warm socks and a blanket or my snugpak, plus a sleeping bag liner. It can be cold at night.
Tea towels
Power banks
Head torches/lamps - you need more than you'd think because people take them to the loo or disappear into their compartment with them. Have one each and a spare. Plus spare batteries

Agree with many of the above as well, particularly solar powered fairy lights round your tent, bowl, washing up liquid, cloths, dustpan/brush

Oh and we have boot tidy type things which are fabric and fold flat but provide compartments you can sort stuff into for ease of access. Aldi had some recently and they were good quality, still stocking them here.

MaraScottie · 29/08/2022 21:51

A portable/foldable clothes rack (a cheap one in argos) - great for drying clothes and wetsuits.

An insulated carpet is a game changer (get it in any camping shop)

A heater if you have power.

I learned the hard way after too many miserable wet camping trips.

These. Showing as our of stock but still seeing them in store.

usernotfound0000 · 29/08/2022 21:55

This is very helpful, thank you! Although I'm now not feeling anywhere near as organised as I thought I was Blush I definitely wouldn't have considered extra blankets etc for night time.

Something like this is very useful and doesn't take up a lot of space

PuttingDownRoots · 29/08/2022 21:58

Fleece pyjamas. Not onesies. Nothing worse than having to completely undress for the toilet when its cold.
