Disposal of empty propane cannisters

We have a Cadac Safari Chef which we love but it uses the little non-refillable propane/butane gas cannisters and we now have about 10 empty ones that are accumulating in the shed.

Extensive googling reveals our council won't accept them at waste centres and we ought to return them to the retailer. Other sites say to ensure that all gas is burnt off and then bung them in the rubbish but this doesn't feel right somehow.

How does anyone else dispose of empty cannisters? Do I just go to Go Outdoor and give them the empties?

I have the sames question.. camping gaz cannisters..

ShutUpLegs · 21/08/2022 13:24

@ChateauMargaux Yup - thems the fellas.

We have a mix of cannisters from a variety of suppliers - some from France that came home and were finished up back here.

It just doesn't seem safe to dump containers hat could still be sufficiently pressurised to cause problems...

I burn the remnants off then pierce the side in a couple of places. Been doing it this way for decades and haven't blown up myself or a binman yet.

THanks @EverythingHeadinSouth That was the other option I found. Good to know it works in RL.

You burn it off through whatever burner attachment you use, right? Apologies for stupid q. I guess that even though they should be empty given that they ran out while being used, there could be remnants still there?

I can see DH being gung-ho about trying to light the cannister (he has shared some hair-raising arsonist tendencies from his teen years....)

Usually you contact the company whose name is on the cylinder and there should be a list of local drop offs for them to collect and recycle them. Recycling them is the responsible thing to do as they can be recycled thousands of times over and the residual gas in them can even be recaptured and reused.
