What do I need

We are going camping. Very inexperienced
In North Yorkshire
My dad is bringing the tent, sleeping bags, stuff for the actual camping so that's sorted.
But can someone please tell me useful/essential things that I need to bring here? For me and my child? (8) anything I might not have thought of?
Will I need to bring winter pyjamas?

Layers are good for camping. It's always colder at night but you do adjust. Warm socks, even a hat at night sometimes. Thermal or wool blanket if you have one.
I find a sleeping bag liner very good for keeping warmer.
Torch or a headtorch, slip on shoes for mooching around the campsite and nipping out to the loo. A discrete pee behind the tent is acceptable at a push in the night!
Fleecy tops, waterproof coat and trousers.
I quite like keeping my undies in a dry sack to make sure they don't get damp. A washbag that's big enough for a towel too and can be hung on a hook. Travel towels take up much less space and dry fast.
Cardboard box by the door for shoes. (No shoes in tents).
Insect repellent, tick remover, first aid kit.
Stuff to play with - bat and ball, frisbee, nothing too noisy!

We always do space blanket then fleece blanket under our airbeds to keep the cold out. Thermals under your pyjamas, warm socks and hats. Extra blankets for over the sleeping bags. If you get cold at night you'll never sleep. Head torches and wellies by the door for night time toilet trips. My DC would say marshmallows and chocolate digestives for making smores are essential.

purpleme12 · 27/07/2022 23:41

Thank you.

Not sure I can afford to get the extras like travel towels and things when it's just a one off.

I'm a bit worried about the cold to be honest.
To top it off I've got Reynauds so it's a bit of a concern for me.
I guess I'll just have to figure out what my warmest jumper is!

I did have thermals years ago actually perhaps I've still got them somewhere

floweringpoppies · 27/07/2022 23:42

Definitely layers as it's always so much colder than you think!!

purpleme12 · 27/07/2022 23:55

Ah god I hope this is going to go ok 🤣

Ok so we'll need winter pyjamas.
Will I be ok in a hoodie over my pyjamas?
Will I need my winter coat?

OP posts:
Infinitemoon · 28/07/2022 09:18

Not a winter coat. Layers are better. I have a mid weight jacket.

purpleme12 · 28/07/2022 09:20

Ok I'll have to remember to search for my thermals.
Although I guess it's my feet I'm more worried about to be honest

Infinitemoon · 28/07/2022 09:20

I have quite a light puffa jacket which is warm enough at night.

Infinitemoon · 28/07/2022 09:22

My DD has Reynaulds and she has been OK but she is wrapped up in her pajamas and dressing gown in bed with socks.

courtrai · 28/07/2022 09:26

Dust pan and brush (cannot stand a gritty tent)
Bucket - useful for carting washing up and storing toys/bits
Coat hangers/hooks - hanging jackets etc off floor
Flip flops - for showers
Hand wipes

Beamur · 28/07/2022 14:34

You don't need to buy anything special if it's a one off. Just take the nearest thing you have already.

ForSaleChesterDraws · 29/07/2022 15:02

Exploding kittens/ Uno or similar card games are invaluable. We can play Exploding Kittens for hours.

floweringpoppies · 29/07/2022 21:34

Carpet! The difference a tent carpet makes is huge!!!

Diversion · 30/07/2022 20:48

First aid kit and insect repellent. Hopefully neither will be required but always best to be prepared. Extra loo rolls even if the site has facilities and provides them and packets of tissues. Antibacterial handwipes are useful when out and about and much more hygienic than normal baby wipes for a quick clean up if you don't have access to soap and water. Bin liners, useful for a multitude of things, putting muddy footwear in the car, dirty laundry, wellington liners if wellies get wet inside, emergency sick bags (hopefully not required) or emergency ponchos if you happen to have forgotten to pack a coat and it rains.

Kevinthesnipe · 01/08/2022 18:28

Depending on your sleeping arrangements you might not be too cold.
if you have electric hook up you could take a small electric heater - there are safety ones that cut out if knocked over. We sometimes put one on just to take the chill off of a morning.

RomainingCalm · 01/08/2022 22:50

Keep in mind that it's easier to stay warm than to get warm.

When it starts to cool down a bit in the evenings change into your pyjamas with your clothes on top. So I would have pjs, then some leggings/joggers, a long sleeved t-shirt and then a fleece/hoody with a couple of pairs of socks (a thin pair and a fleecy pair).

When it's bedtime you can take off some layers and stay nice and warm. A hot water bottle will warm up your sleeping bag if needed. Take a couple of throws/blankets that you can layer over the top.

Sliders/crocs are perfect for slipping on and off outside the tent.

Bunce1 · 01/08/2022 22:53

Hot water bottles

scrivette · 01/08/2022 23:00

I have Reynards and am fine.

Always change into pyjamas just before bed and have separate socks to sleep in so your clothing isn't damp.

I take an extra fleece blanket and fleece jumper so I can stay warm in the evenings and layer up. I also take them into the bedroom part of the tent with me in case I need them (I haven't yet but I like to have them there in case).

Lots of snacks, wine, something to do in the evening (book/magazine) and loo roll. (Most places provide it but you don't want to run out and it's useful for wiping things in the tent).

Funf · 14/08/2022 18:00

Wellies and water proofs just in case, some warm layers as it can be cold and two hats one for cold and one for sun.
But the 8 year old will love it, its a different sort of holiday and great family time

purpleme12 · 14/08/2022 18:18

I went not long after I made the thread.
It was cardi and jeans weather every day but I was very pleasantly surprised how warm it was at night in the tent. I was wearing summer pyjamas, not winter. And my Reynauds didn't flare up

PritiPatelsMaker · 14/08/2022 18:22

And my Reynauds didn't flare up

That's good. Hope you have a lovely time with your 8yo and your DF Wink

Ledkr · 14/08/2022 20:08

Use a flannel to dry off then wrap towel round you. Flannel.much easier to dry than a big towel.
A lidded bucket for a loo if you don't have one and are far away from loo block.
Take a washing up bowl as they sometimes don't provide plugs in the pot wash.
Chairs to sit on.
Lighter bottle.opener and tin opener.

Ledkr · 14/08/2022 20:09

Oops.
Oh well. Good for future trips lol.
