This summer will be DD's first proper camping trip (tent).

She is 5. I want to try and get it right first time and buy a sleeping bag and sleeping mat that we'll use happily for years to come and also make her comfortable enough that she enjoys it.

I'd much prefer a sleeping bag that isn't the shiny, noisy, slippery material that makes you slide off the mat and make a ton of noise when you wriggle.

I've got a soft sleeping bag myself that I got in Millets 20 years ago and is perfect. It's cotton flannel lined and soft (rather than shiny) polyester on the outside with a ton of padding between the layers. It doesn't roll down small but I'm willing to deal with this to have a nice sleeping bag that doesn't make my teeth itch! but I've just googled and am drawing a bit of a blank.

DD can use my old S-I-M for this first trip but I'd be interested to hear if there are any particularly good ones for kids.

Any advice gladly accepted...

If your budget is big enough, go for a junior Bundle Bed

At 5, I’d get her a child’s sleeping bag, which will keep her much cosier than a full size one. DD had a Hi Gear one from Go Outdoors with an extendable foot, which lasted her from about 4 to 9, for family camping (late spring/summer), sleepovers and Beaver/Cub camps. It’s a proper sleeping bag, just little.

(She’s grown out of it now and it’s currently listed on FB Marketplace….)

It is synthetic - quick drying, stays warm when damp - but not particularly shiny.

DD has a Vango kids sleeping bag. It is animal themed although for the life of me I can't remember what the animal is. It was lovely and thick, not shiny, packed into a square bag that had rucksack straps on it so she could carry out easily. She's a tall 9 year old and is just growing out of it.

She just has a normal adult sim from Go Outdoors and was always fine on that.

The Outwell Campion (and Lux versions) sleeping bags are a brushed finish rather than shiny. We got them for both children when they grew out of their child size sleeping bags. I might worry that they’d be a bit hot for a smaller child - not sure. But they’re great quality and the soft finish you’re looking for.
