What’s a reasonable noise level in day?

Just wondering what all your thoughts are on daytime campsite noise.

Just back (actually cut trip short by a day due to this plus awful weather) from a site where we were pitched next to a large group (2x pods & 4 campervans). They basically shouted to each other all of the time across their pitches. They pulled all their chairs and tables together in the middle and were shrieking and having massively loud conversations that were hard to block out. They also played music and loudly sung along to it.

They were good enough to go quiet by 10pm, but it didn’t make for a relaxing camping experience for us in the daytime.

Would you have said anything to them / the site warden about the noise given it was daytime? Was it just tough luck on us or were they being unreasonable?

Yeah that would have peeved me off, I would have asked if there was another pitch I could move to

VerifiedBot2351 · 04/06/2022 19:13

That would annoy me too, but at least they stopped at a decent time in the evening.

bravotango · 04/06/2022 19:37

I hate when people play music loudly on campsites (but I am generally miserably intolerant to noise) so would have asked for a different pitch

We're quite new to camping as a family, and I wasn't prepared for how noisy it could be Blush Our last trip was at a popular resort and there were some families who had arrived together. Kicking footballs around at 11pm and lots of shouting, music and laughing etc. I think it's just different phases of life, we have young kids who were knackered and finding it hard to sleep but their children were older etc. I don't think day time noise would have bothered me as much, but can see how it would be annoying to people wanting to relax.

Thanks all, I’m quite noise sensitive (thanks to some awful past neighbours) so I’m never sure when I’m being reasonable or not.

I did say to DH that we should have asked to move pitches as we could see a spare directly opposite us across the field. He didn’t fancy taking the porch awning off, packing things up & driving caravan across the field as we were only planning to be there for 4 nights. We went out in daytime instead. Thankfully having a caravan reduces some of the noise, but not all of it.

OP and@winniesanderson You get better at finding the kind of site that will suit you.

I pick sites which do not allow any amplified / electronic music. That have restrictions on the size of groups, emphasise that they are quiet / peaceful etc.

PitchUp is good for lots of search filters.

We camped last week and I thought that people were generally noisier than normal, and I put it down to the Jubilee. Some of it was friends and family gatherings (which is actually nice to see after such a long while of restrictions) but I don't think people always realise how noisy they can be in groups. Also lots of music and radios, I accept that that is how some people relax and it's their holiday too, but second hand music really annoys me on a campsite, even if I like the music! A camping neighbour played a local radio station (think Peter Kay Car Share) from about 10am till 8pm, it seemed to be just filler noise for them. I investigated noise cancelling headphones!

We're just back after 3 nights in the Lake District and I found it incredible that some people are so blissfully unaware that they're making other people listen to their racket. We had Elton John belting out until 10 last night - may have been later, but I jammed in my earplugs and went to sleep.

Ponderingwindow · 05/06/2022 18:50

As a general rule, you shouldn’t really hear your camping neighbors at all. Maybe the occasional burst of laughter or some kids playing.

DogsAndGin · 05/06/2022 19:07

My idea of a nightmare! It is reasonable on certain campsite which cater to that type of clientele. Lesson learnt - next time book a ‘no group bookings’ campsite. Many stress on their websites: ‘we are a quiet campsite and are not suited to groups or parties’.

Katkincake · 05/06/2022 23:03

@DogsAndGin good idea, will deffo look for that on websites next time I book. We’re seasoned campers/caravanners, we’ve obviously been lucky to have peaceful neighbours till now.

@lidolemon it was definitely jubilee excitement, esp’ as we got back from a trip out on Friday to find them all dressed up in various costumes and playing kids party games in middle of camping field, whilst others looked on bemused 😂

That's absolutely miserable, and incredibly selfish of the rabble forcing their noise onto others. I would have moved pitches

Excellent advice 👌

I don’t go to sites with EHU, either, as that is where those who camp with TVs, film projectors etc need to go.

But obviously people who want EHU deserve peace and quiet too.
