Well, the Vango Venture 500 i bought last year has now got some mould spots on the Fly sheet/sleeping area bit.

Is there any way to clean it?

I was planning to sell it because i know we won't get to use it again. Because i don't have transport it was too heavy to carry with our luggage too!

what colour mould? is it the spotty damp stuff?

tortoise · 11/01/2008 21:18

Little black spots from what i can see. Haven't managed to get it out 100% yet.
House is very damp.

off to hunt in my mothers "answer to everything" housekeeping book
the answer to everything seems to be vinegar / bicarb / salt.
Back if i find something.
FWIW i use 'mr muscle multi-task' for virtually every household job like this but dont try it til sure

Thanks.
Its rather large to clean!

It sounds like mildew, I would use bleach. Test a small area and be prepared to bleach the whole liner to maintain an even colour. I have used a very thin brush before now to individually dab each spot.

Its going to be a huge job then! lol! Oh what fun!

Yup - the book says vinegar and water have just PMSL whilst reading

is it a separate cotton liner BTW? i.e. would it go in the washing machine

tortoise · 11/01/2008 21:53

Im not sure if could go in the machine. I think it would fit but how would i hang it to dry?
Its ground sheet and fly sheet in one (sleeping area). Main tent goes over the top.

Does it say how much vinigar and water? Or is it vinigar washed off with water?

Or does anyone want to buy a tent cheap to clean themselves!!!

it says "eggcupful of vinegar" ( at the smell) in a 'jug' of water which i'd presume to mean a pint or so. Dead scientific this book as you see.
another random guess, but have you tried milton? again it has worked (diluted) in our caravan.

if it went in the washer (our awning inner did) could it hang over the bath to dry? or would it just mean having a smelly family for a week....

tortoise · 11/01/2008 22:41

I might attempt the washing machine! On a gentle/hand wash maybe. Vinigar will stink!
It is far to big to hang over the bath!
I will have to find a way.
Thanks for help.

leave the tent...come and join the getting-merrily-pissed thread with my name on

cadelaide · 11/01/2008 22:44

ime mould spots like this don't disappear in the washing machine with regular powder, if that's what you were thinking of tortoise.
I used bleach on a pushchair, test a bit first. I used an old toothbrush and did small areas.
What a drag though.

mrspnut · 11/01/2008 22:47

Try posting your query on www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter in the tent forum.

Someone will be able to tell you for definite how to get rid of it.

gigglewitch · 11/01/2008 22:48

clever mrs pnut.
y'see? e waffle on for ever and then someone who knows turns up HOORAY!!!

expatinscotland · 11/01/2008 22:48

try a paste of bicarb and water with a toothbrush first.

if that doesn't work, a paste of bicarb and washing soda crystals (USE GLOVES, soda crystals are tough on the hands).

tortoise · 12/01/2008 12:23

Thanks Mrspnut. I will try one of the other ideas 1st and if they fail i will do a message on there.

Thanks eis. I will try that. I know its not going to be easy!
