We’re going to need a new car in the next year or so and we’ve been looking for one with enough space in the boot to try to avoid having to put on a roof box.

We’ve got a bell tent, awning, inflatable beds, sleeping bags, paddle boards and bikes. In our current car, fitting it all in is like Tetris even with the roof box. It wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t move site when we’re away but we travel around a bit.

Do you have a car with loads of storage? Please tell me about it before I run mad and buy a lorry 😁

We’ve got a Kia C’eed SW, it’s a mini estate. We thought it was enormous when we bought it, though that was compared to a Rover 25 and a Corolla😆

Its a lovely car to drive though and it’s got all the fancy bits and bobs I worry I’ll miss.

Tow bar and trailer? A friend of mine has a camping trailer and they have it ready packed in the garage with all the main stuff so it's ready just to hook on and go - just clothes and food to put in car. I neither have a garage for storage nor a tow bar and am extremely jealous

Ps small trailers don't fall under the same rules as the likes of horse trailers. I can't drive the latter either (by about 3 months 😏) can pull a small trailer however. Passed early 1997

We had a Ford Galaxy, was awesome for camping.

Now our dses are grown, we’ve given up on camping and downsized to a mini🤣

We hire a van! We camp with friends so share the cost of it between 2-3 families. Once there it stays onsite and we spread everybody between the cars if we do need cars during the day. It works brilliantly....cost effective, easy to pack and the teens use it as a base on site once there!

Got a Mitsubishi L200 pickup, but we do tow a caravan. The boot/ pickup space is vast.

stringbean · 08/05/2022 17:00

We had a Mondeo and towed a trailer. With a top box on it. We've now got a caravan. We towed so much stuff with us that a caravan seemed the next logical step Grin

Subaru Forester. Loads of space, lovely car.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 08/05/2022 17:06

Ford S-Max here. No bikes nor paddleboards. And we'll need to use the roof bag this year 🚙

We have a LR Discovery and its surprisingly small. We have a trailer and roof box

This summer we are taking the canoe so no roof box so ill welcome any tips on condensing packing down. I'm wondering if I can strap one of the kids in the canoe...

Justfortherandomquestions · 08/05/2022 17:09

We have a Dacia Logan. Massive boot. We've used a roof box on top too when we've had tons to take.

Thanks for the replies Smile Lots of options I hadn’t considered to think about in them!

Another vote for a Skoda Superb Estate, I have one now having had an Octavia previously. The boot is huge, there is plenty leg room in both the front and back. Mine is a L&K 4x4 version so lots of spec including a fantastic speaker system for belting out music when driving from camp site to camp site. It tows really well so you could get a trailer for equipment like bikes, canoes, etc. I love Skoda in general but really enjoy this car because its understated yet has all the spec I wanted (love the cooling seats for the occasional hot flush). If you want pics to compare to other cars I can stick some up later.

Vauxhall Zafira but we still need a double roof box. And then bikes on the back.

My friend can do their family of five in a Polo. I clearly don't have her skills.

We’ve run mad and went for the Dacia after all since someone offered us a good price for one. It’s not much bigger lengthwise than the one we have but the boot is simply enormous so I shouldn’t be back for a thread on trailers. Though we’re going to fit a tow bar for a bike carrier anyway…

@SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound Hope you enjoy your new car! We've had our Dacia for 5 years now with no issues... it's not the most luxurious car in the world but the absolutely gigantic boot is so so handy for trips away. Enjoy your camping!

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 10/05/2022 18:52

Thanks @Justfortherandomquestions! 😃I’m looking forward to packing the boot and doing a happy dance 😄

Estate car with roof box, (although we lose the boot to the dog), towing a trailer with a roof box! Possibly ott but I like having some home comforts and we also take a paddle board. Occasionally a bike rack on the car boot too. Luckily DH is happy to drive, as I would absolutely shit it 😄

Whatafool123 · 15/06/2022 21:02

We used to have a Vauxhall zafira and that had loads of room, though we still had a roof box and sometimes a trailer. Now we have a Kia hybrid which, while lovely, is tiny by comparison amd we always need roof box and trailer. Also we miss the seven seats, even though we rarely needed them when we had them! DD seems to have loads of friends who need lifts everywhere. We have vowed to get a van next.

SheSaysShush · 16/06/2022 07:14

Audi A5. But the boot is used for two dogs and the sleeping bags and that's it. It's actually a bigger boot that our old workhorse a 3 series BMW tourer. Everything else goes on the back seat for short breaks and use a roof box for longer breaks. I am very good at car tetris. Although it took me 3 weeks to find my walking shoes when I returned from the last trip. They were under the passenger front seat - you can get loads under there!
