camping south france with horse riding

Bit of a long shot but can anyone recommend a good campsite for south of france in april. With own tent. We are looking for somewhere where we can go walking and I can go riding with dd for proper rides - not half hour trots around the campsite.
Thanks

Carcans plage, excellant campsite and with St Helene about 15 mins away excellent riding ops too. Nice long/fast hacks or long trundles through the lakes and marshes.

Carcans plages is on the atlantic coast not far from bordeux-we have been going for 11 years now for the camping and the horses

Fantastic - thanks iMum, I'll take a look at that.

We stayed here a few nights last summer & liked it a lot. It's just inside provence and the pitches are nice and shady (not that that would be so important in April). The campsite owner speaks perfect English. We're not horse mad (dd went on a short ride) but they do do all day rides too and the stables is right beside the campsite. Another thing you can do from there is canoe down the ardeche which was fun.

That sounds ideal Snorkle I was just saying tonight I fancy trying canoing! I'll have a proper look tomorrow.

www.champs-blancs.fr/ is fantastic loads of actiovities every pitch has its own loo and shower plus the riding organised by the on site activity team was described by my horse mad daughter as awesome!

bucksmum · 10/01/2008 22:56

oops meant this one although the one is adge is great as well www.campinglanautique.com/english/index.htm this one also has own loo and shower per pitch!

BadKitten · 11/01/2008 09:25

Oh wow Bucksmum. Never had our own loo! That sounds like bliss I've got a nice range of options to look at now - thanks

fab campsites and makes the whole cmaping experience so much better when you have own toilet and shower just brill! pluis la nautique offers loads of watersports as it has its own lake

The one I mentioned is really the opposite extreme! We tend to go for smaller more basic campsites. It did have a small but nice swim pool though (but could be cold in April).

BadKitten · 11/01/2008 20:00

Snorkle can you tell me more about the site please - is it in walking distance to any villages? can we bbq? How basic are the facilties and are fellow campers noisy?

bucksmum. I was tempted by the site you showed - would be nice to have life easy for once but it seems that much of it is closed in april with the riding being in the summer months only.

We were there only two days. We spent one day canoeing and one day recovering, mostly by the pool (which I've checked is only open June-Sept) and dd went out on the horses. It was extremely hot and we didn't attempt to walk anywhere, the guidebook says there is walking nearby but I'm not sure how near. If you phoned the owner he would tell you - he was very helpful - I phoned to book all ready to try out my French, but he spoke English like an expat.

I've stuck a couple of photos on my profile to try & give you an idea (I won't leave them there too long), but they're not really the best. All around the tree'd area was vineyards seemingly for a long way.

There was bread delivered in the mornings and a bakery approx 3 miles away by road at Bollene which wasn't an inspiring place.

If enough people (6 or 8 I think) went canoeing they would collect from the site, otherwise it was a bit of a drive - not too far. The owner gave us excellent directions and sorted the booking. It was a long day - we went right through the national park down a gorge and it was stunning. There were a lot of other canoes on the river too though. The last bit was very hard work fighting against the wind which was why we were wrecked the next day! Not for small children though.

Individual bbqs weren't allowed - (the trees could have gone up very easily, so understandable), but there was a central bbq area according to the guide book (I don't recollect it).

Hope that helps.

The photos are the best I've got I mean, but don't really show the place very well.

BadKitten · 12/01/2008 17:26

thanks very much, especially going to the trouble of posting pictures. I'll let you know if we decide to go there. may well do!
