To keep caravan or not?

We have had a caravan for a while now. Really torn on whether or not to keep it long term. I'm a bit love/hate about it.

If the weather is good it's great, it's cheap to book a pitch so a very cheap way to explore, love the outdoorsy aspect of it the dc can go free range and make friends on site, running around until it's dark. Love cooking on the camping stove and doing barbecues. Cottages etc have become almost unaffordable since Covid.

If the weather is bad it's really horrible, teen ds doesn't like it, there's hardly any privacy, hate having to wash up and clear up in such a small space, the shower is rubbish so mostly have to use the on site facilities to get a decent shower, hate packing the thing up to go and cleaning it on return.

What does everyone think of touringcaravans?

Keep as its a different sort of holiday, or if its worth a few quid sell it and buy a cheaper one

Do you have to pay to store or is it on driveway? If on driveway keep !!

If you’re stuck to holidaying in school holidays, definitely keep it. We have so many more trips than we could afford otherwise. Eg just paid for 11 nights in Cornwall at Easter and it was £25 a night for 4 of us.

The older DC here are much happier if we go to a site with a beach in (easy) walking distance or on site activities like a decent pool.
Have you though about taking it overseas for a bit of variety (and sunshine). The European sites often have amazing water parks.

Have a look at how much it costs to hire a static or a cottage in the same area and at the same time of year. That’ll make your decision for you.

We just sold our old caravan for a chunk more than we bought it for three years ago. If you are going to ditch it then now is a good time to jump.

I speak as someone whose childhood holidays were all in a touring caravan. Really happy memories. Without it I doubt my parents would have afforded any holidays. But we also had more trips than others eg half terms, summer hols, weekends. The shine was lost a bit for me as a teen and I bailed when I could. But are there options to help with teen privacy and space eg sleeping spaces in an awning or tent?

How old is your teen? How many years will they still be holidaying with you?
