Is this a good idea?

We went camping last year and really enjoyed it except that I found the sleeping so uncomfortable I got so little sleep the day felt like a bit of an endurance test.

We are hoping to go again this year I have looked at better sim mats/air beds etc but they are so expensive. I have come up with the idea of vacuum packing one of my dc's single mattresses as I would only need to buy the vacuum pack bag and a hand held vacuum to use at the campsite to repack it. I proper mattress sounds like a luxury but my dh thinks it is a crazy idea......is this a good idea or am I missing something?

@bravotango

Don't get anything that inflates if you feel the cold, the air inside gets freezing. Something like this www.decathlon.co.uk/p/camp-bed-for-camping-camp-bed-second-65-cm-1-person/_/R-p-311152

is very comfortable.

You have to put a camping mat under the inflatable then it stays warm. Op what do you mean you can never get enough air into an inflatable mattress? You can fill them to capacity, at which point they are hard.

After trying out lots of different camping/sleeping options, I've found that having a SIM on a folding camp bed is the warmest and most comfy. I have a 7.5cm SIM on an outwell posadas bed, but I've also heard good things about the decathlon inflatable base for sims too.

Trying to vacuum pack a single mattress with a battery pump would be pretty difficult, I would imagine.

I took a cot bed mattress once to sleep once. Only my shoulders down were on the mattress but it was very comfortable and warm.

We upgraded from cheap airbed to mid range airbed and it made a massive difference so I reckon an expensive one would be worth an investment if you're going to be camping regularly. We just have cheap sims - I think of them as a back up if beds go down in the night!

I can’t bear any kind of blow up beds but comfort is very individual.

I do like a SIM and am fine on a 7.5Cm SIM with a few puffs of air added in. Lots of people like a SIM on top of the slatted inflatable camp beds from Decathlon, they should have their camping departments set up soon so you could go in and try one?

I don’t think a regular domestic vac pack kit would be strong enough to compress a real mattress with springs etc. Do you always camp with EHU?

Camping is always a terrible idea. That’s really good to know you Best Pop Up Privacy Tent

A basic air mattress (the blue and red one) is fine but the trick is to put a blanket over in before a normal sheet then sleeping bag. I have a self inflating mat these days for space

We have the bed size air mattresses. The double was £100 and so comfy. It keeps inflating during the night with a little pump if it goes down!

This sim from decathlon is honestly so comfortable. I'm considering buying a second one just in case they stop selling them and something happens to mine. You could always order online try it out at home and return if you don't like it. www.decathlon.co.uk/p/inflatable-camping-mattress-ultim-comfort-70-cm-1-person/_/R-p-307396?mc=8595946&c=BEIGE
I always put a big fleece blanket or something on the tent floor makes it warmer and more homely.
