Recommendations for two or three room tents

Taytotots · 01/09/2021 19:43

After a week being rolled on by my kids I am ready to upgrade from our single room tent. Any recommendations for ones with two or three bedrooms? DH is a tent snob and favours the sort you can hike up mountains with but realistically we are mostly car camping now so weight not an issue. Would be nice if it is robust and weatherproof though. We do have a separate shelter for cooking and storage so doesn't need to be massive. Kids won't sleep in a separate tent so that isn't an option annoyingly as we have far too many small hiking up mountain ones already.

The Berghaus air 6.

JustMarriedBecca · 01/09/2021 22:47

We have a Berghaus air 6 XL which has 3 rooms you can separate or keep together. It's flexible.

But it's HUGE and HEAVY.

Taytotots · 02/09/2021 09:39

Thanks @JustMarriedBecca and @IndiaDreaming. Will look into that one. Looks like the type of thing we are after. How do you find the air beams? DH is also prejudiced against those!

I've used an air tent for about 6 years. I can pitch my 6man one by myself. It's not that heavy either, 20kilos. You can filter your search based on weight on the Vango website.

I bought it second hand too, so air tents aren't always more expensive or heavier than poled. I bought a spare beam, just like you would a pole repair kit/spare poles.

If you want ease, convenience and less arguing when pitching and have a family I've no idea why anyone would buy poled these days.

Have a look on FB market place, there are some brilliant ones for sale.

We have the Berghaus air 6XL

Pros: quick to erect and put down
Sturdy as hell.
Blackout bedrooms
Theres 3 bedrooms... or you can unzip to make two areas or one area
Massive living area
Covered Porch area useful for cooking (or in our case... to put the motorbike undercover!)

Cons... it weighs a f-ing ton and takes two adults to lift into the car. It does have wheels though.

IndiaDreaming · 02/09/2021 11:57

There's a 10kilo difference between the Air6 and the Air6 XL.

If weight is a concern Vango tent to be slightly lighter for similar tents.

JustMarriedBecca · 02/09/2021 18:23

Air has been revolutionary. No idea why anyone would use otherwise now. I mean, it's practically saved our marriage.

Taytotots · 03/09/2021 08:26

Thanks all! Siunds like air is the way to go. Annoyingly doesn't look like we can ger Berghaus here (N America) but will look into Vango.

How many people?

Be aware that the pack size of air tents is bigger.

That’s why a lot of us don’t use them. Also the higher expense, when the fabric is the same and will deteriorate under UV sunlight jus as fast. May be worth getting a roof protector to extend life.

Factor in getting an electric pump if you go for an air tent.

I have never found putting up a tunnel style poles tent slow or complicated and can do it by myself.

Not sure what tents are available in America.

Reputable brands here include Vango, Outwell, Kampa, Zempire

Air has been revolutionary.

It’s not exactly a new idea. I remember them from the 1960s. They have taken a while to catch on.

Juanbablo · 04/09/2021 13:53

We have the Decathlon air tent with 3 bedrooms. 2 are permanent and one you clip in. It's a good size and not too heavy. I can pitch and take down by myself.

Taytotots · 14/09/2021 09:59

Thanks @Juanbablo. We do have decathlon here so will look at that one.

@Juanbablo which decathlon one do you have? There seem to be a few air options in decathlon. This one? www.decathlon.ca/en/camping-tents-for-more-than-3-people/302611-72423-air-seconds-42-fresh-black-inflatable-camping-tent-4-person-2-room.html#/demodelsize-254sans_taille/demodelundefined-8505752?queryID=cf47ed5b6ee94cfeb9d32dbaf80f8dc9&objectID=2421661. Anyone else tried Decathlon tents?

We have the decathlon 6 man air and it's brilliant. Blackout is a game changer

Juanbablo · 05/01/2022 16:44

@Taytotots yes that's the one, the second link.

Taytotots · 05/01/2022 17:12

Thanks @Juanbablo and @endlesscraziness. Blackout sounds great!

We have the second link. It's brilliant

annlee3817 · 18/01/2022 22:17

We have a zempire tent, can't recommend it enough, we've camped in gale force winds in it and really heavy rain and no issues whatsoever. I like the Zempire's because the air beams aren't just an arch shape, so you feel like you have more headroom, and the bedrooms are darkened. Not sure if they're available in N America, but if they are, worth a look, I wouldn't buy anything else now, other than a camper van :)

Taytotots · 19/01/2022 23:59

Thanks @annlee3817 will check out zempire. And @endlesscraziness for the decathlon vote. Working on DH as he is still vetoing air tents as worried about punctures.
