Camping with 4 month old - nightwear/bedding?

We are going camping at a festival with our 4 month old. I really want to go but I am very worried about keeping her the right temperature at night. I have been freezing in a tent myself in the past and it's dreadful. Now I have a partner who is like a radiator, and I have a v warm sleeping bag. But she won't have those things. We won't be co sleeping as my partner will be drinking and we don't co sleep at home anyway. So our body heat won't be any help.

I expect the temperature to be 10-14 Celsius at night. What should she wear for bed? I'm quite scared of her getting too cold but then equally there is the SIDS concern if I over-heat her. Is a pram suit too much? How many other layers? Argh. Any advice gratefully received.

Where will she be sleeping?

OiPanda · 21/08/2021 22:38

Have you looked at those sleeping bags for babies you can get? Like grobag. They usually tell you what to put baby in according to temperature

We went when DS was about that age he had vest, baby grow, sleeping bag and then a few blankets which I could add/remove as necessary. He also had socks to put on his hands. We took his next to me bed which folded up in a handy travel bag so was high up off the floor

If you can get a baby sized proper sleeping bag, or borrow one from someone, I recommend. With a thinner grobag type thing beneath (1 tog or similar), and vest and sleepsuit.
If not, I'd go long sleeved vest, footed sleepsuit, 3.5 tog sleeping bag, blanket on top. You can always add the blanket later on when it cools down more.
It's the ground which is cold too. Make sure baby is either in a travel cot off the ground, or with several camping mats and blankets underneath him, tucked in to avoid any dangerous loose bits going over his face. A layer of corrugated cardboard right at the bottom is a good insulator.
For reference, we once froze DS1 when it was around 8 degrees at night in vest, sleepsuit, 3.5 tog bag, blanket, aged about 10 months. The next night we added the proper sleeping bag and more blankets and he was fine. Always have spare blankets so you can layer as needed.

Thank you all so much.

I hadn't decided where she was sleeping. Was considering bringing the snuzpod bassinet. Or just the mattress with lots of layers under as @AnnaBegins suggests. Also considered the dockatot but that is against SIDS guidelines so might make me more anxious.

@AnnaBegins do you know where id get a proper baby sleeping bag or what brand does them? I've been searching and can't find them. Can I also ask how your ds reacted when you froze him!? How did you know he was too cold?

@OiPanda the tog guides only seem to go down to 15 degrees Celsius with 3.5 tog but it will be down to 11 at night. So I'm a bit lost with the normal sleeping bags.

Ours is a vango one called nitestar baby.
We realised DS was unhappy by his whimpering! And when I felt the back of his neck his core temp was too low. Luckily it hadn't been too long so we brought him in with us under our duvet just for that night. We were in a much colder country at the time!

PrincessesRUs · 22/08/2021 20:22

Jojo Maman Bebe do baby sleeping bags with arms that you can't attach in the winter or take off if it's not that cold - I found this really handy anyway to have at home so it could be a good investment

purplesequins · 22/08/2021 20:28

we went camping when youngest was 8 months old.
dc was wrapped up warm in layers in a winter sleeping bag. with a hat. sleeping on a sim with extra waffle blanket.
we took a hot water bottle as well to warm up the top of the sim before going to bed (and then I used it for my feet).

Doughnut100 · 25/08/2021 08:53

@AnnaBegins I've looked for a vango nitestar baby but they don't seem to exist any more, perhaps because they aren't SIDS safe?

@PrincessesRUs thanks yes I've bought a Jojo maman Bebe one but they only have a what to wear guide down to 15 degrees so I'll have to work our how many extra layers to put on her

@purplesequins thanks for your experience but sorry, what is a sim!?

Whed DS was a few months old we went camping a few times.

Vest and long babygrow and into sleeping bag.

We had a mini pop up tent inside the bedroom of the tent, so if he rolled over he couldn't get very far.

purplesequins · 25/08/2021 08:57

a sim = self inflating matress

Doughnut100 · 27/08/2021 12:29

@purplesequins thank you! Of course.

Update in case it's useful to anyone in future: we brought our snuzpod bassinet with us and put it on a foam mat. We bought a jojo maman Bebe 3.5 tog sleeping bag. She wore a long sleeved vest, long socks, a sleepsuit and a hat and the arms of the sleeping back reached far over her hands.

Night 1: It was about 10 degrees. Two layers of fleecy blanket on top of her sleeping bag and she slept better than at home (we are bang in the middle of the 4 month sleep regression)

Night 2: it got so cold, about 7 or 8 degrees. I was up all night worrying. She had two layers of fleecy blanket plus two layers of woolly blanket on top of her sleeping bag. I wanted to put more layers on but was worried about boiling her. She whimpered a couple of times but still slept better than home. This night put me off camping.

Night 3: it stayed at 15 degrees so no extra blankets, easy peasy. Also this night we decided to swaddle her inside the sleeping bag with her arms in as we thought maybe her arms had been cold the previous night. Again she slept great.

We will be camping again next weekend so can't have been they bad! Thanks for all the advice.
