Camping light recommendations

We were camping last week and despite several LED lamps the tent was really dark. Never really noticed it before but others seemed to have much better lighting than us. We recently moved to a bigger tent so that might be part of the issue.

We camp several times a year so happy to spend a bit on decent lights - can anyone recommend anything please? Would prefer lights that can be hung from the roof but also put on a table.

We were having the same issues as you with LED lights. We bought a Kampa Groove lamp this year and it is so much better. It works either off AC230V or DC12V and is even dimmable. We love it as it provides much more light than the previous lanterns etc that we have tried.

Thank you Ditsy I'll have a look at that one.

Camping Gaz ones. Lovely warm light, gives off a smidgeon of heat too. Very cosy and adjustable brightness

This year for the first time we used a lamp which takes our Makita powertool batteries. It was fantastic. But a bit too much of an investment in Makita unless you have/want the perils powertools too.

If you happen to be a Costco member they have their pack of 3 camping lanterns reduced to clear at £6 at the moment. They are really good, can be hung up or stood on a table and have bright and softer lighting modes, we used them on our last camping trip and they were great!

I have a couple of 50 and 100 lumen lanterns that are fine close up but not great going any distance. This year, I got a brighter lamp (either 200 or 250 lumens) from decathlon which was much better and lit up half the marquee well and the other half ok (yes, proper marquee - Cub camp). And it's rechargable, so I can hook it to a solar panel in the daytime.

The other leader brings a proper antique Tilly lamp (80 years old at least) which is great for light but takes a fair bit of effort to get going, so we need extra lighting for a while. A camping gaz light would also work well. But both of those are burning the fuel - so either need a sturdy safe hanging point that won't get hit or a solid table that won't be knocked.

The other trick we do is to get a full water barrel (5l bottle would work) and wrap a headlamp torch around it shining inwards. It magnifies the light and makes quite a good light for a tent.

My decathlon lanterns can all be hung in different ways, and sit on the table.

This is our favourite camping light www.funkyleisure.co.uk/luci-outdoor-20-inflatable-solar-camping-lantern-10942-p.asp. Surprisingly bright and long lasting.

Thanks everyone, some great recommendations, really appreciated.

I think I have a couple of Camping Gaz lanterns somewhere but never felt comfortable using them in case they got knocked over. Love the look of the Kampa lantern and will look at the others.
