Anyone know any campsites where we can stargaze at night? Or any other site if not a campsite..

Have a look in the dark sky areas. Kielder in Northumberland is beautiful

FishfingerFlinger · 16/08/2021 12:43

I’ve been to some campsites in Sussex with fabulous starry skies at night. It’s a recognised dark skies reserve so worth a look round that area.

There's a website of dark sky areas.
Trawsfynnydd cabin village, Bronaber N Wales.
Lots of campsites in out of the way areas.

Apparently the campsite at llanthony abbey near Abergavenny is a dark sky area (according to one of the other campers there). Unfortunately it was very cloudy when we were there so can't confirm but might be worth a google 😊 very minimal campsite and toilets were quite far but a beautiful setting and only £4 per person per night.

We've been to Fforest Fields near Builth Wells a few times, and have always met people who were there for the dark sky so they could do astronomical photography

NannyR · 16/08/2021 14:45

I can second the suggestion of Kielder forest. They have an observatory (?) there too that you can visit.

seekingsolace1 · 16/08/2021 18:25

Thanks all :)

bryncoedcamping.co.uk - really good area for dark skies

longtompot · 21/08/2021 22:39

I saw the Milkyway properly for the first time in Eype campsite a few years ago. The sky was incredible. It's a trip that will stay with me forever.

that looks like the perfect campsite!

Kelling Heath in Norfolk.

Graymare · 04/09/2021 20:07

Seconding the suggestion of Llanthony. Also not exactly a campsite, as no facilities at all (except a river) but you can camp in the field at the foot of Pen y Fan. The farmer comes around and collects a pound from you in the evening, although it has been a while since we camped there, so may possibly have gone up. The stars are absolutely stunning.

Graymare · 04/09/2021 20:10

Should have mentioned has official International Dark Sky Place designation.

imnottoofussed · 04/09/2021 20:33

I once camped in a site in the lizard Cornwall and the sky was amazing. Can't remember the name of the site but kynance cove the lizard is listed as a good place for stargazing

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/gostargazing.co.uk/events/locations/kynance-cove-national-trust/%3famp

this site also lets you search for darksky campsites

Dumfries and Galloway dark skies park

Findingthelight1 · 04/09/2021 20:38

Another vote for Kielder - we've been camping up there for years and the kids (now teenagers) still love it. Though these days they prefer the glamping pods rather than a tent.

Glenbrittle Campsite on Skye had the best skies we have seen for stars. Another basic site, pitch where you like in the dunes, most amazing coastline, no signal at all for any phone and jaw dropping starry nights.
