Due to go camping this week, weather forecast is now constant RAIN! is it even worth going?

I booked a camping trip for me and my young children, it will be our first ever time going camping, we bought the tent the beds the gas cooker the gas bottle all the bits we need, car is packed, trailer is packed, we leave tomorrow! Kids are very excited about it, I however was a little worried it may not be all that, it’s for 4 nights, so I checked the weather forecast for the location we are going, it’s going to rain every, single, day! I’m now debating weather it’s even worth going! Of course it’s booked and paid for which was almost £200 for an electric pitch, so I know I’d most likely not get that £200 back, but is it worth camping in pouring rain with young kids?

I’d go, but with the idea of coming back when you’ve had enough. There is normally always breaks in the rain and from my experience camping kids make friends and play in the rain together with their wellies and brollies.
Just keep your clothes in the car though so if worst happens you have dry clothes.

Well the forecast could be wrong. They so often are.

We had booked a garden visit for yesterday. The forecast was rain all day and we wondered whether to change our booking. In the end we risked it and not only was there no rain, it was lovely and warm and sunny.

There was a shower at about 4pm (we had left the garden) and then dry until about 10pm.

Given all the effort you've gone to I would still go. Won't be much fun for you but young kids don't tend to mind the rain. Just pack wellies/waterproofs and coat hangers to hang wet clothes on, and plenty spare socks!
Cooking in the rain might be a problem but you can always eat out, assuming you're not going to the middle of nowhere.
Hopefully you bought a fully waterproof tent or that could be your main problem!
Oh and take wine /your drink of choice, it'll make everything better Grin.

I'd say go, so they have the excitement of the campsite etc. But be ready to call it a day and retreat to the nearest hotel at 8pm on the second night if necessary!

You might be lucky - the weather forecast has not been reliable of late.

Light showers my arse

Go & expect the worst. It's actually fun sitting in the tent playing games. We've the same but at a Festival with lots of walking & carrying stuff. The thought of an electric hookup & actual campsite in the rain sounds blissful to me right now.

As pp says it won't rain all the time. Takes wellies & waterproofs & Cross your fingers. Good luck!

Thanks everyone, umbrellas, wellies and coats are packed now along with a fair few bottles of wine, my youngest has just turned 3, so it’s him getting bored I worry about if we are stuck in the tent, but never the less we may have the time of our lives so I’m going to give it a shot and hope for the best

I think camping when it's raining is still often associated with being soaked to the bone with unreliable shelter and tents.

MirandaMarple · 08/08/2021 17:08

...tents these days are 100% waterproof (assuming you have a modern tent)

I did actually cancel a trip once because it was too hot!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/08/2021 17:10

We had constant rain forecast for a recent trip.

We had an hour late afternoon day 1, rain overnight and drizzle on the last day.

The real pain is having a wet tent to try out.

taybert · 08/08/2021 19:09

Go! You can always come back. It doesn’t usually rain non stop- there are usually some breaks. Download a couple of films and take some popcorn, tent move nights are the best!

Eatenpig · 08/08/2021 19:13

I'd go. Unless you have a very accurate weather ap like dark skies, the forecast will prob be inaccurate. Look up indoor stuff near by just in case.. a zoo / aquarium / NT place etc Take cards and colouring. Enjoy the adventure

Eatenpig · 08/08/2021 19:14

Just accept also that everything might get grubby etc Weve festival camped with kids in rain and just got used gk mud everywhere lol

30degreesandmeltinghere · 08/08/2021 19:15

Portable dvd player.. Godsend in the rain.
And we love the rain!!

deplorabelle · 08/08/2021 19:17

If you have any spare cardboard packaging, wedge it into the car to use as makeshift doormats for the tent. Rain isn't usually a problem but mud can be a pain

Talipesmum · 09/08/2021 11:25

Take a look at the met office app forecast as well as bbc - we’ve been camping for the past week, and bbc forecast tended to say “might rain, all day” but the met office one was a bit more helpful and would say “tiny bit of rain in the morning, chucking it down at lunchtime, dry from 2pm onwards” which really helped planning outings. Obv it can only be specific in the next day or 2 outlook, but it helped a lot.

Eatenpig · 09/08/2021 11:49

Met check app gives you it hour by hour for nearest town

Emz2019 · 10/08/2021 17:58

Thank you everyone we are here and the sun has been shining like there is no tomorrow 😎, it did rain during the night but that was all, it was dry by the time the kids got up and I’m so glad we came

Ace update! Kids will have blast

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/08/2021 19:31

Oh well done - fortune favours the brave, so with any luck the good weather will stay with you!

seasonalremarks · 10/08/2021 19:39

That's brilliant! Have a lovely time.

buckeejit · 10/08/2021 23:56

Wonderful news! Hope you are enjoying it

garlictwist · 11/08/2021 07:14

I find weather forecasts to be wildly inaccurate.

I went to the Peak District yesterday as it said it was going to be sunny - it was, but only after the first 2 hours of lashing rain that weren't on the forecast.

Likewise, we went away for the weekend last weekend to the NE. Weather forecast was awful but apart from one shower it was sunny and warm the whole time.

MazDazzle · 15/08/2021 22:09

So glad you went! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday.

We camped when there was a weather warning for flash floods. It rained heavily for 24 hours! We were dry in the tent though and the days prior and after had some sunny spells.
