How much can be done as a mum with kids on her own? Camping

Is it feasible? Is there a limit to how far you’d drive? Would it just be too exhausting? Is it too ambitious? Is there a limit to how long it could be done for (eg a week)? Kids are 7 and 12

I’ve done it, just with two kids though, but they were pretty young - older child was under 2 the first time we went camping solo and my middle child was a couple of months old. I haven’t been for years since having my younger.

I’m not a huge fan of camping and so only really consider it for 1-3 nights or events (festivals mainly) when there are lots of other people around, friends acquaintances, and a shop or place to buy supplies, meals. In terms of equipment, we did it on a very basic shoestring as we hadn’t any money and we hadn’t a car so anything we took had to be carried and earn its place in the bag. Tent, torches, sleeping bags, clothes was basically all I took. Once the tent was set up we’d head out for supplies. So I wouldn’t go to the middle of nowhere, but maybe that would have been different with a car.

I take my four DC camping as much as possible. Pre-covid it was a weekend once or twice a month, for the entire season with two or three 7-10 day trips.

We invested in an air tent which is so easy to put up. We have the berghaus air tent and I highly recommend it!

When the children were much smaller, I would rent a tent through eurocamp or similar. It really does make life simpler, especially if you are just starting out.

On the trips when DH wasn't with us, I kept things as simple as possible. Nice walk, swimming pool, simple food (I planned all of this ahead of time) bbq in the evening. I would go to bed with the kids and wake up with them. Your DC are old enough to help out with the food prep and the chores.

The drive would depend on the destination and how much it appealed.

Sometimes we go to a campsite that is 15k from our home but we would also drive 7 hours to camp near a theme park that we all loved!

Good luck... it will be great fun!

I went on a mums and kids camping trip for a weekend, really lovely campsite. I would suggest getting together with friends rather than just going on your own.

I've only done 2 nights alone with the children, who are 13, 11 and 7. They are pretty helpful but I am able to get the tent up and down on my own if I need to. I'm not sure if I would want to do it for longer than 3 nights.
