Pitching and setting up a caravan - hardstanding vs grass?

Getting a vintage caravan tomorrow (I hope this has been going on for months!)

So first place I want to use it they have said the ground is too soft

So any tips, generally for setting up on grass/hardstanding? I have drill bits welded to the legs I just need to get a battery drill/screwdriver

I hope to have a canopy so suggestions for keeping that up would be good too

Generally hints and tips from people who have done it would be great

Oh and I need ro buy a mini fridge and a portapotty - anybsuggestions or thingd to avoid?

Brave choice opening up the side with the large door. Is there steel bracing to compensate for the loss of stiffness?

We keep our van on one site now and always have hard standing pitches. Even when we toured we preferred hardstanding purely because if it rains our awning flooring stays dry,so you're not tramping wet and mud into the van and the caravan was easy to tow away. We always have a pitch that has grass around it so you can sit out as it's much nicer being on grass.
Good luck!

KatyMac · 18/07/2021 17:02

It's not ready

@DogInATent I hope the professional engineer did but tbh I didn't ask other than to make it road worthy safe and legal

It's going to be tricky siteing it - I do think hard standing is better

I'd ask the question @KatyMac

There's not a lot of continuous wall on the side they've cut it through, and it's a square corner. Wobble-boxes rely on the shell for structural strength and they've compromised the original design by a lot on that side. I bet they're calling it a conversion and not a new build, so they'll be avoiding an IVA and issuing a CoC.

Thetford will have a cassette loo, you could have one built-in or a portable one to use with a toilet tent outside the caravan. For a fridge you need to decide how you'll power it - mains electric or gas.

What are you doing for the electrics? just EHU or a 12v system with a solar panel?

KatyMac · 18/07/2021 17:41

I have a hook up and a battery I'm hoping to add solar when/if I start making money

I think maybe a cool box rather than a fridge - or the little one that takes 4 cans

Probably a bucket loo nothing fixed in

It's a "timber sandwich with a steel frame bolt into the frame" I may have misquoted....

Were we discussing your plans several months ago in this section of MN? Just realised it seems familiar.

KatyMac · 18/07/2021 18:00

Probably I've been trough a horse box, a trailer and now a caravan

I have nearly finalised the styling inside and out - just have to do it

Need ro get someone to lay rubber flooring (I'm guessing it needs epoxy)

I have to paint, sort out rain/draft exclusion for the doors (bit stumped on that one but his idea was pants)

I have the curtains, mattress

Oh wow that's going to be lovely.

DogInATent · 18/07/2021 19:40

You'd normally have brush-strip rebated into the door edges for the weatherproofing and a bit of a jamb to pull it against. But you'd also normally have round cornered doors and never square corners.

KatyMac · 19/07/2021 09:35

Well I got it hone - still got loads to do

Need to buy a thing to make the legs go up and down first

Oh wow! I can't wait to see the end result.

blobby10 · 22/07/2021 13:09

When pitching on grass, get some blocks of wood to spread the load and avoid the jacks/corner steadies sinking if the ground is damp/soft. If you can get your hands on some offcuts of scaffolding plank its perfect!

KatyMac · 22/07/2021 14:09

@Northernsoullover I have some painting to do but just you wait

@blobby10 I'll do my best to find some

KatyMac · 22/07/2021 21:53
