Trailer tent - inexperienced what do I need to research

I’ve camped before (as a girl guide 😂) and loved it but my husband is not as keen. He doesn’t like insects or sleeping on the floor (or roughing it really)
So I wondered if a trailer tent might be better for us.
Neither of us can tow a caravan on our license (or particularly fancy it but a trailer doesn’t seem as big a deal and we have dry garage space to store it)

We have 2 DC (age 1 & age 4) and I work in schools so am limited to school holidays forever more.

There’s a shop local to me selling serviced, reconditioned and waterproofed 2nd hand trailers for around £1000. Visiting them is my first port of call.

Would it be really cheeky to ask if I buy one and don’t get on with it could I sell it back to them? Obviously for less - I’ve looked into hiring one but would be £500+ for 4 days and the hiring site pitch it and pack it up for you which is the part I’d want to test out most.

Even if I sold it back to them at half the price I still haven’t lost anything (and don’t have a trailer to try and get rid of)

I’ve looked on pitch up and found plenty of sites that look good (play areas, electric pitches, showers etc) that are really reasonable.

I’m sure I could get carried away buying extra gear but could it really be as simple as buying a trailer tent and swanning off for the Easter hols every year?

Any advice, tips or newbie friendly websites appreciated!

Thanks

We used a trailer tent for our family holidays for years. Loved it though I was only young - I do remember the arguments my parents had putting the poles together though Grin

We are camping in the south west just now and the wind and rain are really bad in a tent. I don't remember it feeling as cold in a trailer tent, with the beds being so much higher. I don't think trailer tents seem to lose much value once second hand from looking on market place - alot around £1-2k. I know towing can be an issue now though if you got a license after a certain date so worth checking out.

If you can’t tow a caravan on your licence then I’m guessing you can’t tow a trailer tent either. I’d check that out first. Sounds like your licence will limit the weight of vehicles you can drive as well so a campervan may be out of the question to.

The easy option would be staying in budget hotels or get your partner to pull up his big boys pants and face the great outdoors.

Most trailer tents are quite light so should be OK to tow with any licence.

Car licence, that is.

I looked at getting a trailer tent but opted for a trailer and a tent instead. Problem with a trailer tent is where do you put all the other stuff you take camping? There's only so much you can fit in the car.

Camping with a regular tent doesn't mean you have to rough it. Ours is massive, full standing height, 3 bedrooms, carpets, raised beds, electic lighting etc. We even take a kitchen sink.

I am a reluctant camper and love our trailer tent. It is very old but so much more comfortable than a standard tent. Positives are, having an indoor cooking area, being raised off the ground so warmer, comfy beds, super fast to put up and down, large awning for all the stuff. Negatives are, ours is 2 double beds so kids share, really do need that awning as space inside is 90% beds. I'd get one with a proper door rather than half zip half solid. There's also more storage than you think when packed away so you can put a lot of kit in with it and only need suitcases/duffel bags of clothes in the car.

We put it in the trailer tent.
