Campsite with things to do in walking distance

Looking to find a dog friendly campsite that we can park up at for a week. And not need to move the campervan once we arrive. Hoping either near to beach/seaside with shops/places to eat or a town/large village with nice walks/coffee shops etc.

Within a 4 hour drive of Bristol if possible. Am I looking for the impossible? All the campsites I've found so far are quite remote, not within a couple of miles of anywhere.

Wallpark Campsite in Brixham is good. Easily walkable to the harbour, sea pool, beaches, nature reserves and coast path. Can get a ferry from the harbour to Paignton/ Torquay and Dartmouth. Easily enough to do in a week without needing to get in the car. It’s all pretty hilly though so not great for bike riding so it would need to be walking.

Longthorns farm in Dorset, it's next to monkey world and you can hear the monkeys! It's lovely! Oh and they have alpacas too

There are quite a large number of campsites along the steam railway route between Corfe Castle and Swanage - therailwaycampsite.co.uk/ is one but there are others that are less "back to basics" that you might prefer. It makes a brilliant holiday to camp there as there are a variety of activities accessible via steam train (obviously once it is all open again) so you aren't limited to what you can walk to.

We went to one in Brecon that was right in the town (great if you like walking)

CoffeethenCrochet · 13/04/2021 22:59

Thanks everyone, lots to look at.

Ooh following with interest!

If you don't mind holiday parks, Lower Hyde at Shanklin on the Isle of Wight is close to the town and the beach, and also the railway station to go to other places on the island.

Hook Farm is within easy walking distance of Lyme Regis www.hookfarmcamping.com

Holland’s Wood is a short walk from Brockenhurst in the New Forest www.campingintheforest.co.uk/england/new-forest/hollands-wood-campsite

Lots of the Camping & Caravan Club Sites and Caravan & Motorhome Club Sites, have bus stops just outside their gates. They usually mention it on their websites.

ReviewingTheSituation · 04/05/2021 16:28

We stayed at one in Dawlish Warren last summer. Didn't use the car for the 3 nights we were there. Lots of walking, but also well served by bus.

Scott's Farm in West Wittering, Sussex. Can walk to beach in 5-10minutes, large village centre with shops and a really good selection of restaurants in under 5 minutes.

Also buses through the village that can take you to Chichester or nice places for walks. You'd probably even be able to make it to Portsmouth historic dockyard for a day using the bus or bus/train combo.

There isn't a pool or clubhouse on site though.

noodlezoodle · 06/05/2021 18:53

I haven't been for a few years but we loved North Morte campsite - it's a mile and a half walk from Woolacombe, lots to do.

Also Ashurst in the New Forest - but beware, the horses WILL steal your food Grin

If you have your own loo etc the Temporary Holiday site (THS) at Burton Bradstock is ideal, £11/night per unit, a field away from miles of beach, lovely village pubs and walkable to West Bay. This runs all of June and August for C&CC members. They also have these THSs at Charmouth where the facilities are open. These sites and the small Certificated sites are what makes us pay our membership fees each year.

Fivemoreminutes1 I was going to suggest Hollands wood

have stayed there for a week in the camper van and not driven once

used train to get to boat to IofW and bikes to get to supermarket

or cirencester is a great campsite for motorhomes if you don't want to move, you need to join the caravan club though...

dogs are welcome on the estate park, which is very large. its a short walk into town with coffee shops Waitrose and museums

ivykaty44 · 19/05/2021 18:41

alternatively Warwick is a very central campsite - again you need to join. dog friendly walks, museum, walk along canal to leamington, great parks etc

ivykaty44 · 19/05/2021 18:43

oh and leamington has an array of independent coffee shops all very good and excellent cafes to eat/dine as has Warwick

Darklane · 28/05/2021 21:23

Moreton in Marsh, Cirencester, Tewksbury all are what it sounds like you’re looking for. All Cotswolds so drivable to Bristol, all right in the towns, very dog friendly sites & pubs. All Caravan & Motorhome Club sites with lots of space & good facilities.

Darklane · 28/05/2021 21:26

Oh & contrary to what others have said you don’t actually HAVE to join the club to stay on their main sites, it’s just cheaper per night if you are a member. You do have to be a member if you want to stay on their small five outfit only CLs though.

CeibaTree · 31/05/2021 07:52

We stayed here a few years ago, lots to visit within walking distance and a lot of people with dogs staying at the campsite.

LemonRoses · 31/05/2021 08:01

Nodes Point, St Helens on Isle of Wight is virtually on the beach and has direct access.
Beach has cafe and St. Helens has a shop (as does campsite). Campsite is on a caravan park with pool, bar, entertainment such as children’s activities and a playground.
It’s an easy walk to Bembridge village with restaurants etc.
It’s also on a bus route.

Juanbablo · 04/06/2021 08:44

We just stayed at Far Peak Campsite in Northleach and it was brilliant. Climbing centre and low ropes course on site. There are various things to do within driving distance like the wildlife park and the Roman villa.
