Brittany Campsites

Hi! We are tentatively starting to plan our trip to France this summer mid July. We have a daughter who will be 2 then. Our holidays are now changing to be more focussed on keeping her entertained. So no more Gites in deepest Dordogne!

We are keen to go to Brittany as I have many happy memories of childhood holidays on campsites here. For toddler convenience we are looking at mobile homes. From my search I've shortlisted the below and would love any thoughts.

We would like a peaceful setting which has stuff to keep our daughter entertained. We want to be somewhere quite unspoilt, and that feels French if you know what I mean! I don't think the really big campsites appeal. It would be nice to be walking distance from a village or small town which has a shop and restaurants. Hopefully a pretty town/village.

Our shortlist:
-La Baie, Trinite Sur Mer
-La Plage Trinite Sur Mer
-Des Menhirs, Carnac
-La Plage, Le Guilvinec
L’Atlantique, Beg Meil.

Also welcome any thoughts on risk of booking holidays to France in July? We could go in June but thought best leave a bit later to when hopefully things have settled in the UK and France as well in terms of C19 levels.
Thanks :)

We've been to L'Atlantique, although it was 5 years ago. The campsite is great, and the beach is walking distance through a forest, but the nearest town probably isn't walkable (especially with a 2 year old!). Trinité Sur mer is beautiful and has lots of restaurants and cafes etc overlooking the harbour. We haven't stayed in either of the campsites you've mentioned (we stayed at Camping Kervilor). However, when we were there in 2019, the town was running a free tourist bus service that stopped at campsites, beaches and the town etc. That could be pretty handy if you didn't fancy a long walk.

Following as I’m also looking for a campsite in Brittany by the beach and a village or town.

I'd find somewhere with availability and get a deposit down asap. I've just had a call from Eurocamp who are removing a load of vans from where we are going to maintain social distancing, we have been downgraded from a 3 bed to a 2 bed.

TBH I am on the verge of cancelling, even if it goes ahead France is still in a mess and it won't be the holiday we are used to if SD is still in place, pool slots need to be booked etc.

Can't help with those specific sites but in terms of likelihood of travel to France in the Summer, sadly no one knows.

We have a campervan and usually travel to or through France but are holding off booking atm.

A French Mn'er on here recently posted that travel to her country was very unlikely this Summer. They are still under tight curfews (no immediate end in sight) and well behind the UK on vaccinations. If travel is allowed from the UK we remain at the mercy of the country we are travelling too. I would think at the very least you'd need to be vaccinated and/or have a negative test on entry and return. Quarantine may remain in force. However this is all of course speculation.

If you are booking it goes without saying make sure you can cancel or postpone without penalty.

I worked at Des Menhirs, Carnac (back in 2008). I wouldn't describe it as small, I thought it was one of the bigger sites. Eurocamp only had pitches on some of the site, the rest was run by other companies. The town was lovely, though very touristy and English fluently understood. But town and beach aren't really walkable from the site, especially if they still lock the back gate (used to have to stand and yell until a tourist passed a chair over the fence to climb over the gate). You'd need to drive or rely on taxis with a toddler. Unlike a few of the other sites I worked though, it was safe to walk there, some of the other sites (none that you've listed) were nearer towns, but there were a lot of muggings/assaults on tourists. There seemed to be plenty to do on site and the Carnac stones are interesting for adults to look around. Evening entertainment was loud and could be widely heard throughout the site until it ended for the night.

That was 13 years ago now though (I've got so old), so others are likely to have much more up to date information.

Looking on their website it says sea 300m and reviews say close to the beach, so I'm it suggests you can easily get through the gate and not walk all the way around now?
