Caravan weights, if you are refurbishing?

KatyMac · 27/09/2020 20:25

so if a caravan weight 1000kgs and you take out the kitchen bathroom etc to use as a market stall do you just take it to a weigh bridge and get it re weighed so it's the right weight for your car

Or is it (like I expect) more complicated than that?

It's more complicated. The law for legal towing goes by the MTPLM on the plate, not the actual weight measured on a weighbridge. The MTPLM has to fall within the limits of the GTW of your car.

It's slightly different if you have a car old enough to pre-date GTW.

(MTPLM - maximum technically permissible laden mass)
(GTW - gross train weight)

And can I get it replaced (down)

OP posts:

I meant re plated sorry ( the motor home we had was re plated higher so I wondered if i could replate something lower)

You'll need to contact the DVSA or the caravan manufacturer, or someone like SV Tech or JR Consultancy who do re-plating. Manufacturer first.

I know it's different if its been up-rated and then you want it down-rated back to the previous rating. If you're lucky the manufacturer offered the same caravan in different models with different MTPLM so the paperwork already exists.

It's picking up the phone or sending an email. It's within your capabilities.

KatyMac · 29/09/2020 13:43

Nope its finding a caravan that suitable for converting
Finding someone to convert it
Then doing the phkne call to see if it works

Too many variables I think and so many ads don't put the weights on so even before I buy it I have to do the whole conversation without knowing if gutting it would take the weight down low enough for the absolutely fabulous but stupidly low towing ability car i bought

What's the tow limit you've got to work with? If you haven't bought the caravan yet, you haven't yet got a problem.

KatyMac · 29/09/2020 14:14

900kgs

Which is pants

I need something to sell clothes from at a market/fair

So maybe a box trailer?

OP posts:
DogInATent · 29/09/2020 14:35

There are many caravan options with MTPLM 900kg or less, and the restricted payload that would normally bring are less of an issue for you if you're stripping it out to use as a mobile shop.

KatyMac · 29/09/2020 15:25

Really?
I was struggling to find ones that weren't adorable retro/vintage/original that I couldn't bear to destroy or an absolute disaster!

And i need to find a person to do it

I am such a wuss

Three models to look for listed here, and that's without looking beyond the second result on a Google search:
www.lightweightcaravan.com/lightweight-caravans-1000kg/

KatyMac · 29/09/2020 18:39

those ones don't look as precious to rip apart!

OP posts:
ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 29/09/2020 18:49

Have you looked at a Go Pod?

KatyMac · 29/09/2020 22:02

Thats really just for sleeping in - i saw this at the weekend and thought it looked fab

The second pic is me in the rain as I couldn't put my sides up because of the wind and i couldn't get my stock out in case it got damaged/turned into a kite!

They've done a major structural alteration to that caravan to be able to cut the side out. That's going to be a specialist job.

Looking at their website they used a 1980s caravan. There's a big advantage in using an older/vintage caravan as it's more likely to be built with a frame that can be altered. A modern fibreglass caravan relies on the whole shell for strength and chopping out a side may make it completely unsuitable for taking on the road.

There are people that will do this sort of alteration. But you may be better with a box trailer and working out how to make it look less boxy. Or a van.

KatyMac · 30/09/2020 14:21

Yes, I guess I start ringing round companies/caravan people

The caravan idea is off and I am looking at a stronger gazebo!

I’ve got a market stall steel construction and brakes down to lengths short enough to fit in the back of a small hatchback. There’s still a chance of it blowing away but it won’t get wrecked like a gazebo would.

Have a google Exhibition trailer
