Too windy?

Hope someone can give a bit of advice.

We are due to go camping mon-fri at lizard point Cornwall. Weather is looking shocking, gusts of up to 50mph at some points, wind hovering around the 20mph mark. Our tent is the huge skandika nimbus 12 man tent. We've never really camped before and I think it's going to be a terrible experience.
Can anyone give us some guidance on if we should even bother going?
Thanks

I wouldn't bother to be honest. Camping in strong winds is miserable.

We were camping in the Lake District this week and had 50mph winds. We headed home on Thurs, 2 nights early, after the first sleepless night and with 2 more nights of similar weather forecast. Were worried about tree branches falling as well as possible damage to the tent. But mostly it was just so noisy! It would also have been tricky taking the tent down in heavy rain/ wind.

Sounds like it would be terrifying, I wouldn't go

We came back early last night after spending one night in a pop up campsite near Bristol. Very strong winds and a lot of rain overnight. Tent was ok but it was noisy and a bit scary. Only 2 hours from home and we lost about £50 not staying the second night so not the end of the world. Also they had compost loos which smelled atrocious and that was a deal breaker for me I’m afraid.

Not this week but a few weeks ago we camped in Wales in very windy conditions. I could hear the pegs being ripped out of the ground. It broke our big tent with thick steel poles and the weather just took all the fun parts out of camping.
Tent is in the bin now but as our girls are growing up I don’t think we will be doing any long trips again. Might look to buy a new one in the winter for weekend trips that can be booked when weather looks good.
Maybe you will be able to take your tent out for a spin Sept/Oct we can have some lovely weather early autumn.

Storm Francis is raging until 9am tomorrow. 70mph winds in some places. I think a lot of tents are going to get wrecked, and just hope no one gets hurt.

We've just had an email with an amber warning, it was yellow until now.

Should have said - that's from Anglesey down to Cardiff/Bristol and across the country up to the Wash and a bit beyond.

I would cancel. Camping in strong winds is no fun. There’s a chance you’ll really put the kids off camping.

We went on Monday, like fools despite the warnings. Mainly because we were meeting up with friends we really wanted to see. Were supposed to be there 3 nights, they closed the campsite this morning and said that hardly ever happens, it was that bad. Awful night lying awake listening to the rain and wind, wondering if the tent would take off any moment. We were ok but a lot around us weren’t.

My advice for anyone considering camping in these conditions would be don’t do it!!!

We now have a whole car load of muddy stuff to sort out, over 8hrs driving there and back, should have stayed on the sofa!
