3-berth (or small 4-berth) with headroom?

My back can’t take dressing lying down any more. I need a tent that I can stand up in.

What I need:
an area where I can stand to get dressed,
light weight (with my back I cannot lug heavy things in and out of the car),
well-ventilated,
blackout/solar-reflective flysheet
3-berth,
an enclosed porch area,
easy to pitch/strike.

My current favourite tent (we have several!) is a Quechua Two Seconds 3 XL. It has all of these, except a standing area.

We have an Outwell Birdland 3 as our small tent. maybe not quite big enough for you as it only sleeps 2 comfortably in the sleeping pod (although we use the other section too sometimes) but it's high enough to stand up in.

Flyingarcher · 15/08/2020 22:02

@Dilbertian we have a six berth (but fits three very comfortably) that is fully standable up in that we are going to sell - not sure how much for £50ish. If you live in SE and are interested, let me know.

Dilbertian · 16/08/2020 08:57

What model is it?

We've got a 6 for 4 people always get a bigger one than the number of people

Dilbertian · 16/08/2020 09:11

The Outwell Birdland 3 looks good in terms of size and layout, but it lacks any blackout.

My Quechua is the first blackout tent I've ever had, and it makes an astonishing difference. Camping, the light normally wakes me within about 30mins of sunrise. If I sleep through the dawn, I usually wake overheated within an hour on an averagely sunny morning. Yet last week, when it was mid-20s and climbing as soon as the sun came up, I slept until 8am!

Another lovely tent, but too big and no blackout.

Yup, no black out. I have to say the Decathalon tents we had for the teens were awesome. I think they do one you can stand up in. This one is for sale coz I bought them a Berghaus air tent for four. Fantastic and pitches in ten mins BUT bloody heavy.

Dilbertian · 16/08/2020 17:59

All the Decathlon tents I have had have been excellent. I'm eyeing up the Air Seconds 4.1, but at 14+kg it may be too heavy. The Arpenaz version looks very similar, but with conventional poles. Both have only one ventilation point in the bedroom, though, unlike the pop-up one I currently have, which has 3.

I've never had a tent with blackout so I guess I'm used to it and my kids are teens now so sleep through anything! I'm a good sleeper anyway but have an eye mask to hand which I put on if I wake at the crack of dawn and it sees me through to a reasonable hour Smile

NotMeNoNo · 17/08/2020 19:46

Is the decathlon arpenaz 4.2 (several versions) tall enough for you?
Our tent is that shape with the two side bedrooms, we get dressed in the centre area if height needed.

NotMeNoNo · 17/08/2020 19:50

This one

lekkerkroketje · 18/08/2020 15:42

We have the Arpenaz 4.1. It's ok for 1 person to lift for a few metres but it needs two over any distance and definitely two to put it up. It's a fight to get it back into the bag as well. We used it in 40 degrees this summer and it was as ok-ish as anything could be! It's got one large vent at the back of the sleeping, but also a large mesh panel in the sleeping door and a large mesh vent in the roof panel so the heat escapes up and out. If you buy the Decathlon tarp, you can use the tarp poles to prop the door open as an extra seating/shade area.

NotMeNoNo · 18/08/2020 21:23

You can always repack a tent into 2 bags. I agree the Decathlon tarp is great, this is ours used this week ( with a couple of extra poles also Decathlon)

This was our awning last week GrinGrin

I have never been so glad to have a rope and an old sheet!

I think I've been spoiled by my little tent. It's incredibly well-designed. It's just too low-ceilinged for creaky old bones.

I know shade isn’t normally the priority in the uk is it?! Grin

Dilbertian · 18/08/2020 23:05

It is for me, now Wink

Are you still camping? Have you surveyed the camp site for any suitable looking tents if you are on one?

Dilbertian · 19/08/2020 10:32

No, I started the thread after I came home.

Dilbertian · 19/08/2020 10:34

There wasn't much between 2 berth popups and massive pod or tunnel tents. I think mine may have been the only one in that field.

NotMeNoNo · 19/08/2020 11:34

If you look for recommended tents for bikers, they often favour small tents but with standing height. (Not sure about bringing the motorbike inside!)

NotMeNoNo · 19/08/2020 11:35

I think Khyam do one.
