Camping in Keswick next week, weather looks atrocious.

We’re due to camp in Keswick from 20th to 24th but the weather is looking like rain all day, every day. Wind isn’t too bad though. Would you bother going?

Which weather forecast are you looking at?

Doesn't look too bad to me? Certainly not atrocious anyway!

Thursday might be a bit dodgy but it wouldn't be a holiday in the lakes without a wet day would it Grin?

So in short, yes still go.

TheCumbrian · 14/08/2020 18:47

I also wouldn't set too much store in the forecast beyond a few days in the future in the Lakes. The effect of the hills etc make it a best guess

PlugUgly1980 · 14/08/2020 18:50

We'd still go, have never let the weather put us off. Waterproof jackets and wellies. You can still have some good walks, bike rides, boat trips, visit museums/castles, etc. Only thing you might want to avoid is climbing too high up of cloud level is low. Lots of nice cafes and pubs. Also lots of nice places to visit nearby Whinlatter forest park, Windermere and Low Wray Castle, Grizedale forest for the sculptures, Hawkshead, Ambleside, etc.

I managed to spend a surprisingly long time with 2 young children at the pencil museum on a wet day. Might be worth checking out

Tr1skel1on · 14/08/2020 18:56

I don't live in the lake district but near enough. The weather forecast will change all the time, don't start worrying now

DemiBourbon · 14/08/2020 19:06

I did think (hope) it might change a bit nearer the time. I’ll have to stop myself checking the forecast because every time I do it gets worse! We all have waterproof boot, coats and trousers and me and the kids don’t mind a bit of rain but DH can’t be happy unless it’s 27 degrees and cracking the flags Grin Activity suggestions are alway gratefully accepted so many thanks for those. I remember going to the pencil museum on a school trip and I really enjoyed it!

Love the pencil museum.

Also always recommend the square orange in keswick for pizza/delicious food. Not sure how social dostancing has affected them, v small restaurant.

stairway · 14/08/2020 19:12

I wouldn’t want to camp in the rain tbh, though you chose the rainiest place in the UK to camp so you must have anticipated this. Personally I’d give it a go and come back early if no improvement.

Tootletum · 14/08/2020 19:20

We went a few weeks ago. Campsite was a mud bath. I didn't enjoy it.

Tootletum · 14/08/2020 19:21

Also, all the indoor kids activities had queues half a mile long when it was raining. We sat in the car most of the time and ate a lot of pasties. Fine if that floats your boat!

DemiBourbon · 14/08/2020 19:48

I am a bit concerned about the campsite tbh as it has been known to flood. Will just keep our fingers crossed but it is definitely an option to pack up if the going gets too tough (already googling luxury hotels in the area). I do like pasties thought Grin

As others have said, far too early for an accurate weather forecast for the Lake District, as the mountains cause very local variations. Rainfall can be very localised in Cumbria. Glenridding for example can often be wild, windy & wet whilst a short distance away the weather is warm and quite sunny. The Eden Valley the other side of the M6 often has much lower rain fall (as it’s petered out after falling heavily on Lake District Mountains or Pennines). I appreciate you couldn’t change where you’re camping but if they’ve got a drying room for clothes then you can always head over to the Eden Valley for the day if it’s very wet at the campsite. Hope you have a good holiday.

Thanks OfficialLurker, it’s good to get the inside info from those in the know.

I agree with Officiallurker, its often wrong and mixed, but plan things for it.
This is a nice day out and can be done when wet

We were in Ambleside two weeks ago - definitely plenty to do nearby (eskdale railway, aquarium, etc) if it rains but you would be wise to book attractions ahead of travelling to the Lakes. Once the weather turns everyone floods to the indoor things. Plus we had zero phone signal at our campsite (which was lovely but not handy!) so simply couldn't book anywhere. In which case I recommend the massive garden centre in Ambleside as it sells lego

petalsandstars · 19/08/2020 17:32

We went recently - long range weather forecast was awful but we had glorious weather the entire time so the weather forecast may change. Kong adventure was good - inside activity centre for climbing etc - book online, the puzzling place looked good in brochure but we didn’t actually go in.

stairway · 21/08/2020 17:19

Hope you are having a nice holiday OP and your tent is well pegged in!

helpfulperson · 21/08/2020 20:13

Even though it sounds naff the pencil museum is worth a trip.

I love the aquarium at Maryport as well.

Coffeeandbeans · 22/08/2020 12:13

Weather warnings have been issued for Tuesday onwards. Winds. I’ve just cancelled my trip. Normal family tents are not made to cope with weather warnings.

taybert · 22/08/2020 20:42

The weather warnings aren’t for The Lakes though (but I accept it looks a bit grim!)

KillingEvenings · 23/08/2020 13:05

Sorry to sound like a scavenger, but what camp site were you booked with? We are here and want to extend our stay, rain be dammed. Grin

Glendaruel · 23/08/2020 13:30

Puzzling place is fun and Keswick Museum has children's trails and chance to play the musical stones
