What size of coolbox for 3 nights?

There are 4 of us and I can't see us camping for more than 3 nights / long weekend.

What size of coolbox do we need? Is 25lt big enough?

This thread is a few years old now, but if you've landed here looking for guidance on selecting the right cool box, we’ve recently refreshed our best cooling boxes page with plenty of advice, plus the top products on the market according to Mumsnet users. We hope you find it helpful.

We have about that size of cool box for any trip, yes it's the standard basic size.

Thank-you, that's good to know. Its a while since we last camped and attempted to do it with a cool bag which was useless after about a day.

Coleman Xtreme is meant to be a good cold box, have just upgraded to one after getting fed up of the buzzing 12v electric one. Plenty of ice packs too so you can swap them in and out of campsite freezer if there is one.

The Colman xtreme is the one I was eyeing up, just wasn't sure what size to buy.
I searched previous recommendations on here and looked up icey-tec, no chance can I justify the cost of and they look awkward to pack.

But good to know that electric isn't the 'best'. I did consider it but thought it would limit where we could book.

Does the camp site have a freezer? Quite a lot do so if you take 2 or 3 freezer blocks you can rotate them between the freezer and your cold box.

We have just been away for 3 nights and took a 40l Icey Tek.

They are expensive but our remaining food and drinks were still cold Monday afternoon after being packed Friday morning. That was without refreezing or changing the blocks, and the cool box being left in the tent in the extreme heat of the weekend just gone. I debated for a good while before buying but it has proved its price for me.

Blackbear19 · 12/08/2020 11:52

Is 40lts not massive for a weekend?

I do get Icey Teks are probably good, but my DH would think I was off my head to pay that much. The colman xtream will be max I'm paying but what size?

I have an Icey-Tek 55l which is enormous and I love it to bits.

However, as we tend to be away for long weekends and have got better at planning meals I'm considering a smaller one...

Just need to convince DH that it's not excessive to have Icey-Tek siblings. Grin

What size would you suggest for its wee brother?

@Blackbear19

I am looking at the 40l one - I don't think that 25l is big enough for 3x days of camping and milk/wine doesn't quite fit when upright.

CeibaTree · 14/08/2020 21:06

We usually camp for 3 nights and have the Outwell Fulmar 30l which is the perfect size for that amount of time. Keeps things cold for that length of time too if you pack it right :)

Morfin · 14/08/2020 21:13

Love my 40l extreme. The most important factor is of wine can stand up right. Freeze 2litre water bottles if you don't think you will fill it and then you have cold water.

NotMeNoNo · 17/08/2020 00:22

Ok I would say we got 2 days out of the Coleman Xtreme and after that I worried about the pork pies. Pre chilled with 2 big frozen bottles. Maybe I didn't have enough ice packs. As it emptied out it seemed to struggle.
