Going camping in the USA having flown in from abroad. Have you ever done this?

Just speculating about future holidays with DS.

He has allergies - so it' a lot lot easier to cook own food. Which is why we camp a lot as cabins with full cooking facilities are expensive.

We have camped a lot in Europe. Now thinking about a US road trip sometime.

Ideas include taking over a small tent and some equipment, buying tent and equipment in the US or apparently you can rent out camping equipment as well.

Hiring a car and doing a road trip.

Looked at RV / camper - but that looks expensive.

Has anyone done similar? What did you do? How did you find it?

I did this type of holiday when I was younger.
We flew to Phoenix in Arizona and hired an RV through Camp America. We each got a pack containing everything we needed from bedding to plates and cutlery.

We then did a big circular tour taking in San Diego, LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas.. It took us 3 weeks and we always stayed on KOA campsites with swimming pools and other facilities. These were pre booked in advance. The longest we stayed for was 5 nights in places like San Diego and LA, others we just stayed 1-3 nights.

It was fab. The driving was easy, the roads are big and straight- no roundabouts to negotiate! And everywhere had RV parking- from major tourist attractions to the supermarkets.

I remember it wasn't the cheapest holiday- but it was a brilliant way of seeing places.

Hope that helps Smile

Sounds great fun.

I had a Delta Air Pass many years ago so did a lot of travelling by plane. Really want to see the 'ground' with DS.

An ex and I camped in San Diego about 20
odd years ago, just took a tent and a back pack and flew there. Took a taxi from the airport to the campsite. It was fine, except we had no car, so had to use public transport when we were there, which everyone we met thought was mad. The city buses were really good, and there was a trolley to the Mexican border but only poor people use public transport apparently...Otherwise we walked but there weren’t many pavements - walking was met with more hilarity than the bus...We had a great time.
