Well ,me and the rest of the world are very interested in these .

I'm trying to buy one for a friend ( genuinely ) and struggling .Owing to cost and availabilty it looks like it's going to be a bucket type one .

Has anyone any advice on where to buy ( second hand chemical one from ebay ? ) or tips on use ? It would be used by one person ,female ,early 60's .

You need the pink and blue chemicals, and also a site that has a chemical disposal point.

People use everything from home made buckets with pipe insulation round the top to sit on, to this sort of thing : www.amazon.co.uk/Portable-Camping-Detachable-Outdoor-Festival/dp/B01FQXRJD6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?hvlocphy=9045891&hvnetw=g&keywords=bucket+toilet+with+lid+and+seat&hvadid=451233860341&qid=1596533689&dchild=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwjqT5BRAPEiwAJlBuBWtOGFGP-ioM1hZQN4aM8hwTGW-OYBK5JSHYMyW56IFDCEqPrDZzXBoCagIQAvD_BwE&hydadcr=8294_1819428&hvdev=m&hvqmt=b&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=kwd-922125887488&adgrpid=105973941500&hvrand=9934116522638848618&sr=8-1

Some people line the bucket with a plastic bag full of cat litter and dispose in the rubbish (wee only) , others just use the bucket as is and empty down the toilet.

You really need to talk to your friend about what she is prepared to deal with!

For example I never go to the kinds of sites that have disposal points.

Thetford are probably the most popular brand for this sort of thing. Use the green chemical (not the pink and blue) with cassette loos and it can be emptied into a normal loo, even one on a septic tank.

The ones that use the bag liners with absorbent granules can be disposed of with general rubbish (or into a dog poo bin).

The campervan parked next to us last week had one of those pop-up outside loo tents to put around theirs.

Thetford are best but at £100 ish not cheap.
Try Facebook market place, get you rubber gloves on and clean it up, Aldi Do chemicals cheap.
Friend of ours wee's in a bottle and No2 in a bag, its all down to budget

Herbie0987 · 04/08/2020 17:49

We have the Thetford615, and used it for the first time last week, after 2 days we emptied but it was too heavy for me to carry, I would have to empty everyday to carry it. Would recommend it.

Thank you all for this .Very helpful ,especially about which chemical can be used with a septic tank .

That Siairis option looks ideal .

We are camping soon and can't get a camping toilet anywhere, we are going to have to use a lidded bucket i think, we've just seen some reviews which say the toilets aren't that clean. Wish us luck !

InTheWings · 05/08/2020 09:00

@peridito I have just noticed that delivery on that one is not til Sept /Oct though.

DogInATent · 05/08/2020 09:02

Try caravan breakers and salvagers, they strip out old caravans for useful parts. There are several companies do this around the country. Ex-caravan units might be a good bit larger/heavier though.

Leisure Shop Direct is worth ringing to see what their stock situation is for the Thetfords, they haven't updated the website message about low availability from July.

Yes, the cassettes can get heavy. Two of us can make the Thetford cassette in our motorhome last 4+ days. A quick tip, if you're using them for, err, "full service" needs, they are easier and less unpleasant to empty if they're not too fresh and the chemical has had chance to work. With a Thetford in a MH I reckon about 20 miles of driving helps break things down.

That's why we have got a bucket ! Hmm

eurochick · 05/08/2020 09:21

We went the lidded bucket route and lines it with a bin bag and put a bit of cat litter in the bottom. It worked well. FWIW, the toilets where we went were pretty clean, but there was no social distancing.

WhatTheFeckIsGoingOn · 06/08/2020 10:30

We use a portable potty, but we're not a large family (as in I'm only 5ft and can easily sit on one) might not be sturdy enough for a larger adult. They take disposable bags that are lined with an absorbent pad. I only use it for night time emergencies when I don't want to be trecking miles to the loo though.

Awning10 · 06/08/2020 21:38

We have a "luggable loo" but a bucket with lid will do the job. Line it with a bin bag and then put wood chip cat litter in the bottom. It soaks up the wee and can then be disposed of in the bin and nobody is any the wiser! Much easier than a porta potti.
