Camping for a week UK

ColouringPencils · 27/07/2020 20:37

My original idea was to stay in 3 different campsites for a couple of nights each, but now I am wondering if it's better to just stay in one place and settle in. Would we get bored and sick of each other, or do you feel more relaxed? We usually only go for 2-3 nights at a time, so a week seems long for me.
Also, I really need something better to lie on. Any recommendations for airbed or camp beds that don't cost the earth? I have tried very uncomfortable versions of both.

In a tent? A week's too long IMHO, mainly due to the Great British Weather, unless you go all out but in that case you won't want to be packing /unpacking to go to different campsites. If you have space in the car take a mattress, always available on free sites and loads more comfortable than anything you can buy.

Yes in a tent, and no room for a mattress. Actually my car is quite small, but I may get a roof box... Yes the weather is worrying, but I will need to advance book anyway as everywhere is getting booked up. Usually we don't plan that far ahead and just see when the weather is good!

Honestly I wouldn’t want to be pitching and packing up every few days. We pitch for a week, sure you might get a couple of days of rain but that could happen for your entire couple of days anyway. We take quite a bit of kit though.

Always found things to keep us all occupied.

Have you tried actual camp beds and sims? I’m fine on double height air beds or normal ones but I know not everyone likes them. Aldi currently sell cheap sims/camp beds and air beds so worth a shot.

InTheWings · 28/07/2020 08:26

Go somewhere where there is lots for you to do, rather than sit in the tent.

Walks, castles, a town to visit, hire bikes or kayaks, lots of ‘attractions’ are open now.

A SIM is far more comfortable to sleep on, IMO, and much warmer as they provide insulation, and I am happy with one on the floor but you can put them on camp beds.

I wouldn’t be packing up and moving around unless I had tiny backpacking amounts of stuff.

The worst bit of camping is the getting set up and packing away. I’d definitely go to one place for a week. I always feel more chilled the longer I’m camping for.

Puffalicious · 28/07/2020 08:33

Same as PPs stay in the one place, packing up is the pita.

Go Outdoors doing their EuroHike beds for £15 at the moment and they're decent.

PurBal · 28/07/2020 08:33

I have a thermarest neoair that I love. Would be very comfy for a week. I don't consider it that expensive since it's a bed but depends on budget, I tend to invest in camping things that will make me experience enjoyable.

mrsm43s · 28/07/2020 13:56

Personally I wouldn't want to be putting up and taking down the tent multiple times in a week, so I'd stay on one site.

Regarding beds, a decathalon inlatable bed base, with a decent 10cm + thick SIM on it would be my choice.

DogInATent · 28/07/2020 17:12

Tents work best as fixed bases for several nights, otherwise you spend too long setting up and breaking down camp with every move. Maybe just a couple of sites in a week rather than three?

Try SIMs (self-inflating mattresses) instead of airbeds. They pack small, are insulating, and very comfortable.

MiniMum97 · 28/07/2020 17:44

Yes I'd ouch for the week too. Too much faff pitching and unpitching.

Clymene · 28/07/2020 17:50

I am a fan of a really good air bed with a duvet on top of it so you're in a duvet sandwich. I'd stay somewhere for a week (or maybe 5 days?) with lots of things to do in the local area. Being nearish a town means there's things like a local swimming pool or cinema when the weather is bad is useful. Also hot clean showers!

Echobelly · 28/07/2020 17:53

I'd do a max of 4 nights in one place. A tent becomes a pigsty after a day or two unless you bring along loads of storage, especially if the weather is bad.

Schmoana · 28/07/2020 18:07

Book for a week. Then when you know what the weather will do you can avoid rainy days for setting up and especially packing up. Moving around would be a nightmare. I booked for 5nights but only did 3 - but still had a nice trip

SIMs are best for warmth but I now have an air bed on top of SIM for comfort - in my old age!

ColouringPencils · 28/07/2020 22:42

Thanks everyone, we've gone for 5 nights in one place. Can consider adding on another two elsewhere if we're loving it (and there's space) and it's only 30 mins from the in-laws if the weather is too awful. Now to check out SIMs...

Normally we would book for 3 days and say we may stay longer - then see what the weather does.

However - lots of camp sites are fully booked for the next month so you may not be able to be choosy.

ColouringPencils · 29/07/2020 14:00

I know, that's the problem @PaulaSmith1! Normally when going for a weekend I only book it a couple of days ahead. Oh well, will have to keep our fingers crossed for a sunny summer!
