If you've stayed on a UK campsite this month, what precautions were in place?

As above. If you have stayed in a tent (not a caravan with your own facilities) on a UK campsite this month, what covid precautions/changes had the campsite put in place please? Mainly interested in how they handled toilets/showers/washing up, but would welcome any observations of what is being done.

2 sites:

Site 1
Contactless check-in
Sinks for filling up your bowl with hot water to take back to the tent, rather than stand next to others
Notices limiting the number of people using the toilets and showers
Frequent cleaning (I do believe this, it was very clean)
Withdrawal of ice-pack freezing facility

Site 2:
Cut down on number of bookings
Contactless check in
Issued with own washing up bowl to wash up at tent (we had ours anyway)
Issued with toilet paper at check in rather than using the holder in the toilets
Extra cleaning
Asking groups to maintain 'bubbles' if camping with others.

People were sensible about distancing round the facilities.

Cupidity · 20/07/2020 22:04

We had outdoor check-in. Hand sanitizer everywhere, with sign insisting it be used before entering toilet/shower blocks. Plus they were only allowing half the capacity of pitches to be booked. It all felt very clean and safe

janinlondon · 21/07/2020 13:08

Thanks all for these responses. that all sounds sensible, and what we are expecting. happy camping!!

Motorhome but I can answer re the facilities :

Camping and Motorhome Club site 1 - toilet block open but only 3 people allowed in at once, for about 200 pitches. Controlled by bands like swimming wrist bands hung on pegs to show occupied. Obviously meant long waits as people could be nipping or doing full abloutions! Washing up one person at a time.Facilities only cleaned once a day. Hand sanitiser in Reception, check in inside but with screens.

Camping and Motorhome Club site 2 - similar to above, but they also had 2 unisex toilets that were just one in one out.

Privately owned site in Cornwall - remote check in. Toilet blocks cleaned about every two hours during the day. No queuing inside the block but all cubicles available, maximum of 8 allowed inside each block (6 blocks). Loads of Hand gel dispensers all over the site. Washing up permitting 3 at a time per block, stood with backs to each other, and again cleaned all the time.

Guess which we're going back to Grin

lachy · 21/07/2020 20:18

Temperature scanned on arrival
Toilets and shower blocks were immaculately clean and there was always some one cleaning them
Plenty of space between pitches

Lucienandjean · 21/07/2020 20:35

The site we went to had contactless check in. The toilets and showers were restricted to 3 people at a time in each block, and alternate toilet cubicles were locked so we were well distanced.
The facilities were closed for cleaning twice a day. They did look very clean.
The laundrette was open as usual.
The dishwashing area had every other sink closed, and extra cleaning in place.
The pitches were big anyway so no problems staying 2 m apart.
I had been nervous about going but felt reassured by how clean everything was.

QueenofLouisiana · 21/07/2020 20:44

Like a PP we had our own facilities, but can still answer.
Site 1-privately owned. Toilets opened as a whole bathroom. So once in you locked the main door and had 3 shower stalls and 4 toilets to yourself. Disinfectant provided for you to clean all touchpoints. Hardly anyone on site, but much evidence of cleaning.

Campsite 2: CCC CS. No facilities available, had to be self contained. Water and waste available and EHU. Payment in sealed envelopes. Visitors allowed on site, but with request that we stuck to gov guidelines on groupings and distancing.

Lachy - temperature scanned?? Was this in the UK?? What did they do if someone was running hot??

OneForMeToo · 22/07/2020 08:00

I think a few places are scanning on arrival. Just like quite a few shops and workplaces. Presumably if you have a temperature your sent away again.

InTheWings · 22/07/2020 09:24

We get temperature scanned in the way in to work. I have worried that arriving after a brisk 40 min walk in the sun I will be too hot, but it hasn’t happened, even when I am sweating. So maybe somehow these scanners measure your core temperature.

janinlondon · 22/07/2020 13:32

I'll be a bit cross if we drive four hours to a campsite and they refuse us entry on the basis of a temperature scanner - they only measure skin temp not core temperature.....

OneForMeToo · 22/07/2020 14:07

Check their website and recent reviews that should tell you if they are checking.

Yes, It was in the cotswolds.

The site had said that if anyone was running a temperature then they would be refused onto the site.

Thankfully we were okay, and I don't think they turned anyone away, but it was reassuring to know it was essential for anyone coming onto the site.

AriettyHomily · 22/07/2020 17:56

Just come back - check was in the office but only 1 person in at a time, screens etc. Shop / playground / family area closed. Two people allowed in the toilet block at once. This one didn't particularly make sense as there were 8 toilets and 8 showers in each block so if two were in the shower you could wait a long time for a wee!

InTheWings · 23/07/2020 13:09

None of the sites I have been to / am going to scan temperature. It will say on their COVID arrangements statements if they do.

Drive the last 3 miles with the windows open if it is a hot day Wink

Obviously anyone with symptoms such as an actual temperature should not enter the site.

InTheWings · 23/07/2020 13:09

P.S where are you going?

janinlondon · 27/07/2020 08:57

Just back from Byecross Farm - all similar measures to what PP have said on here (minus the temperature scanning!)

Currently in wales camping the weather is as shit as can be we have already had a partial tent collapse. Anyway to Covid careful check in and hand sanitizer around the toilet block. One way system to use the facilities but it’s very quiet so no issues there.
Lots of pubs and cafes still closed where we are and as it’s pissing down there is nowhere to go inside either like a cafe or have a pub tea.
It’s definitely only one to do if you have fair weather. As it’s been so windy even those with a shelter to cook under were getting soaked.

profpoopsnagle · 28/07/2020 12:30

We are now at our first site. All facilities open and the playground. Hand sanitiser, paper towels rather than air blowers and disinfectant available. A couple of washing up sinks closed to maintain distance and only 1 in the laundry/reception. They are doing 3 cleans a day (use family rooms then). Hand sanitiser available at all water points. It really feels as safe as it can be.

Namechangeforthis88 · 30/07/2020 17:02

Caravan and camping club were doing about 5 or 6 cleans a day of showers and toilets, armed with Ghostbusters style backpacks of spray fluid.

Only one washing up sink in use, had some good chats in the drizzle while queuing at a distance to wash up. Contactless check in. Hand gel everywhere. Queue outside for showers and toilets. Shop and laundry closed, but I formed the impression that if you were desperate e.g. for camping gas or tent repair tape they would sell it to you.

We also stayed at a smaller private site that took our temperature on arrival. They were more relaxed but much smaller so easier to just avoid contact at facilities.

Deliqueen · 30/07/2020 17:18

My husband runs a large site and they have about 60 toilets across the site in different fields/blocks so are allocating each bubble a toilet of their own(so a much reduced capacity of max 60 bubbles over all the sites). Showers are booked to enable cleaning between. Washing up is take bowl back to tent.
All very civilised, plenty of space and everyone being very sensible 👍

parrotonmyshoulder · 02/08/2020 22:05

Just back from a privately owned site. Only 4 women’s toilet cubicles and 3 showers for about 30 touring vehicles and an enormous and full camping field. Site manager claimed to be cleaning toilets twice a day but little evidence of that. Often no soap (obviously took our own),only one handryer available. He didn’t ‘believe this covid thing’.
3 washing up sinks.
Campers were sensible. Site claimed to be fully open with all usual facilities.

GrimSisters · 02/08/2020 22:14

Camping and caravanning club. Contact free check in. Reception/shop closed. Play area closed.

Only 2 out of the 4 washing up sinks in use, so two people could wash up back to back, but not next to each other. 3 out of 5 showers in use, fewer toilets in use. Hand sanitiser dispensers at entrances to loos. Thorough cleaning done twice rather than once daily.
Doesn't seem to be much of a queue for the showers though. I imagine a lot of people are using the bathroom facilities in their luxury motorhomes and caravans. There seems to be a huge increase in these, many costing more than our house!

Coffeeandbeans · 02/08/2020 23:50

Only 50% of pitches being used so plenty of space between pitches;
Shower and toiled block regularly cleaned and being wiped down;
Signs up to keep distance;
Hand sanitizer on entrance to blocks;
All toilets in use;
All showers in use - large self contained units;
Hand dryers in use;
Only two people allowed in reception at a time;
Washing up area - more than a meter between each sink.
Felt very safe.

Dee1975 · 03/08/2020 22:03

Just returned today from Dorset.
Less people
Showers not in use
Every other communal wash up sink taped off
Hand sanitizer everywhere - loos, water points, bins ...
Contactless check in
More cleaning of loos
Play park closer
Felt happy enough ...
