Lightweight one person tent?

Lemononachair · 18/07/2020 11:45

I want to try and do some solo camping this year and need a small/lightweight tent I can carry with me. Since I only have a motorbike for transport I would like to try and keep the weight and size as low as possible while still having a good amount of space 😂 I know those things are usually mutually exclusive!

Anyone have any tent recommendations? I'm on a bit of a tight budget which is always a problem when trying to buy lightweight camping stuff so I'm open to trying other options like a bivvy, hammock etc. Just trying to figure out the best set up that will give me room to sleep, protection from elements and will feel safe and secure for solo camping 😊

I have a Terra Nova laser. I really like it, but it's not cheap. I camped in it recently in high winds, and as long as you pitch it right, it's very stable. You could consider the Zephyros Compact 1? It's very similar to the Terra Nova one, but a bit heavier. That won't matter much though if you're on a motorbike.

Forgot to say, Alpkit also do a 1-person tent for just over £100 which gets very good reviews.

Assuming you're in the UK, I wouldn't go for a hammock. Not enough trees and in Scotland you'll be eaten alive by midges. Midges + weather are another reason why I much prefer a tent over a bivvy. Even with a small 1-person tent you'll have sufficient space to shelter from the weather, make a cup of tea without getting wet, etc.

I have a Vango 1 person, I think it's a cairngorm. Quite small, easy to put up, I bought to go camping on a windswept island for a 1 night trip to stay low profile (my other 1 is a 4 man BetaXL) with Scouts.

It's very handy to have thrown into the car as a spare, tucked into a corner.

I have the decathlon one for cycle camping. It's been fine so far. I also take their 3 man lightweight hiking tent if I want a bit more luxury. That one's survived thunder storms and all sorts. I think you get more flexibility with cycle camping than motorcycling because everything can be strapped on Mr Bean style without being a hazard to other road users!

Do you actually want a one person tent as Opposed to a tent for one person to camp in?

We have one of these that has withstood wind, rain and festival abuse www.millets.co.uk/tents-camping/107838-eurohike-tamar-2-man-tent-red.html
Cheap and 3Kgs.

But if I could run to it weight and size wise I’d rather have one of these

Personally I wouldn’t resort to one of the very lightweight, very low, one person tents ‘technical’ tents unless I was actually backpacking, or also carrying a tarp. Because if the low headspace and general lack of room in case you need to prepare food and eat in the tent.

I've got a lanshan 2 that I tried out this weekend for the first time and I was very impressed with it. It's technically a two person tent but you would have to be on very intimate terms with your tent mate!! in reality it's a roomy one person tent, with enough space to sit up and two porch areas. Very lightweight too. Only issue would be that you put it up using trekking poles (although I believe you can buy a set of lightweight poles) so maybe not ideal for a biking trip.

Lemononachair · 19/07/2020 23:39

Ideally I'm looking for a 2 person, so a roomy one person that I could potentially fit another person in 😂

Thanks for all the recommendations, I've been looking at some OEX tents, either the Phoxx or Rakoon? They both seem quite good and reasonable price. I'm looking at a lot of reviews of all sorts! Ultimately I think I'd rather have a slightly heavier tent that has a little more room/headspace and is just a bit more comfortable than a super tiny 'coffin' tent that's really really light.

DH has just packed our new Berghaus Brecon onto his motorbike for an early start tomorrow. It seems really spacious (in the event we manage a 2 adult holiday one day) for its pack size. That new range of Berghaus tents all look good.

I use the decathlon quickhike. About £120. Plenty of space but packs down small. Have camped for up to a week in this.

Lemononachair · 22/08/2020 20:07

Just thought I'd report back in case anyone is interested in a review.

After much research, I decided on the OEX Rakoon 2 and I'm so glad I did!

I've just been camping with my bf in it for 2 weeks, experiencing a combination of heavy rain, wind and extremely hot sun and humidity. Can honestly say that we did not have any issues at all with it, it felt very stable in what were quite strong winds due to storm Ellen and it felt completely secure and safe from collapse. The fact that it's a inner with a fly meant that in the humidity all the condensation just collected on the outer. Didn't get a single drop of leakage.

It has 2 doors and vestibules which were really handy for getting in & out and for gear storage. The mesh panels were great for ventilation and keeping the bugs out but it was quite warm inside, especially with 2 people's body heat.

Very quick set up, probably 10 minutes from start to finish and that was with us being slow because we took a little while to figure out how to peg out the fly sheet correctly. With practice probably could be half that.

Plenty spacious for 2 people to lie down & sleep comfortably and to sit up inside for dressing and moving around.

I love the fact that the tent packs into 2 dry sacks, one for the outer and one for the inner and poles, it means you can spilt the load with a partner easily or distribute the weight better if you are carrying it solo.

The only thing I could nit pick on if I had to find a flaw is that there is only one hanging hook for a lantern and it's on one side rather than in the middle but it's such a tiny thing 😆

Anyways, it might not be everyone's cup of tea but I thought it was perfect for what I wanted and a very reasonable price (about £80) so I'm very happy with it.

My teen son has the OEX bandicoot II.
Its withstanding current high winds and rain brilliantly. Solid and dry.
Room for luggage alongside him and also porch area for footwear and other bits.
Packs up very small. Assembles outer-first which is a bonus in bad weather.

MovingtoEssex · 22/08/2020 21:54

😆 sorry just seen you bought already. OEX seem great. Enjoy!
