Portable loos

We've booked a campsite for August and they've just contacted us to say we need to bring a portable loo or won't be so allowed on site. This is to comply with government guidance that you should have one loo per bubble. The onsite loos will be available for emergencies if you are "desperate". I don't mind the idea of buying and using a portable loo but I'm a bit worried about taking it home in the car. I'm not sure we'll be able to clean it properly on the site - we might have to use it for everything Hmm. Any advice?

The blue/green liquid you put in the cassette will dissolve everything, especially if you use the proper loo paper. When you empty it out, you give it a rinse so it should be fine.

CMOTDibbler · 10/07/2020 20:23

A cassette loo seals it all in, so you empty, rinse it out and then keep it shut in the car. We got a specific bag for ours, but you could just take a couple of bin bags to put it in on the way home

Interesting - going camping twice in August and neither site has asked us to bring our own toilet.

One has 'long drop' toilets and the other has said there will be specific bathroom timetables with cleaning in between

I've been fantasy choosing campsites and there is a wide variation .

A lot are not accepting tents . But a fair few are opening with shared facilities and a range of practices from booking your shower slot and allowing 15 mins between each use or simply advising that only 2 people at a time can use the facilities .

Some are closing kitchen facilties ,some with open air washing up are unrestricted .

Right ...back to fantasy tent buying for me .

We have bought a toilet tent and portable toilet, most campsites have chemical toilet disposal areas where you can empty the cassette and flush through with clean water. We belong to camping and caravan club, some sites are closed, others are open but no toilets or showers open and the rest have all facilities open with enhanced cleaning. We have been given a tip not using the blue and pink chemicals for the toilet instead use a washing machine tablet in the cassette, it does the same job but a lot cheaper.
Enjoy your camping

Really - do they both contain the same chemicals do you think ?

I'm thinking washing macihne stuff is mostly soap/sodium laurayl sulfate and was imagining that the other stuff had magical breaking down properties .That I don't like to think of too much .

Herbie0987 · 11/07/2020 12:34

My sis in law has a motor home and uses the washing tablets all the time

Herbie0987 · 11/07/2020 12:35

Eco washing machine tablets work the same, so I have been told

peridito · 11/07/2020 15:04

good tip,thanks

SunsetSongster · 11/07/2020 19:33

Thanks for all the replies. It doesn't sound as bad as I maybe thought. I'll have a look at the cassette type. It's a bit of a wild camping site though so I'm not sure how easy it'll be to rinse.

We've booked somewhere else for a different weekend and they seem to have their loos open for now.

Needs to be a Bio washing tablet (or liquid) or it won’t break down the contents.

Also some sites will gave a septic tank for emptying - if that is the case can’t use the blue/pink fluids and need bio-degradable (I think)._ worth checking.

Funf · 15/07/2020 09:25

Most sites have what's often called an Elsan facility, just a posh place to empty the bog, just ask on site I am certain they will help. Much better to have your own for nocturnal emergencies.
Just take disposable gloves, the modern chemicals make sure it wont smell, we get ours from Aldi

PaulaSmith1 · 16/07/2020 09:32

We got a glorified bucket with a toilet seat on it - just for emergencies - have not used it yet but the plan is to use a bin liner and chuck it away.

peridito · 16/07/2020 16:01

How are you going to dispose of contents ? And will you have something in the bin bag liner ,some kind of liquid to negate smells ?

PaulaSmith1 · 16/07/2020 16:18

Put it in the general rubbish - sealed up so no smells - I must stress this is for emergencies only.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 16/07/2020 20:14

I use a bog in bag stool with a bin liner and wooden pellet cat litter - for nighttime wees - and I also have some peebol bags for my boys to do nighttime wees. Both are sealed and thrown away with the general rubbish.
