Have you camped with your bottle fed baby?

Hi, I'm looking for advice and tips on taking my 2 month old on a 1 or 2 night camping trip who is bottle fed. First of all is it possible?

He has 2 feeds at night, at home we use a prep machine and when out use the tommee tippee flask to make bottles.

We've got a carry cot so guess he will sleep in that in the tent. Unless there's anything else more suitable.

I never would have considered this with my now 3 year old as he was such a bad sleeper at night. But maybe I'm wishful thinking. If you've done it. How did it go? What do you recommend? In terms of feeding and where to sleep? Or anything else I need to consider.

Thanks

We used disposable bottles and ready made milk but this was beach camping in Spain 20 years ago.
I don't know how different things are now.

Ah yes I would have to use ready made disposable ones as I wouldn't be able to sterilise the bottles easily. Probably going for one night is more feasible.

One night or 10 nights once you are organised it doesn't make much difference
We always said you needed just as much stuff for a weekend as you did a fortnight.

A bucket, some water, Milton tablets, and ready made milk

We did it with a 6 week old both times round. With my second we did it for 2 weeks when he was 6 weeks old. Totally agree with the fact that you need the same amount of stuff regardless of if you're going for one night or 2 weeks!

If you have electric hook up you could use an electric steam steriliser. And a kettle to make up formula. If not Milton and ready made bottles are your friend.

I am very laid back though and was happy to occasionally 'sterilise' bottles by giving them a good wash then submerging them for a while in boiling water.

It's totally doable and a nice change of scene!

Check the campsite takes v young children. Some have a lower age limit.

Bezzi, that does sterilise them!

OP, I have camped with toddlers not a baby. I think my main source of hassle / worry would be not havjng immediate access to a hot tap and soap for hand washing after nappy changes and before handling bottles etc.

Also (maybe just me!) I find camping quite a hands on mucky business: hands on the grass or tent pegs etc, and would want to wash my hands before wiping the baby’s face etc. 2 month olds are so tiny.

Gosh it's takes me back. We used to camp every year when children were younger, including with our 5/6 month old bottle fed twins one year. We had electric hookup and took an electric kettle and steriliser. It worked very well but:
A) there were no night feeds involved by then and
B) this was when you were "allowed" to mix pre-measured formula into room temperature cooled boiled water.

Scruffyoak · 08/07/2020 09:22

I used cold water steriliser.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to air bnb it instead. Well done to those who have camped with a baby!!

We were on holiday a few years ago and there was a family in a tent with a 6 week old for three weeks....had to admire them

CottonSock · 08/07/2020 17:15

Air b and b good decision!

GlassHouseYouGlassHouse · 10/07/2020 20:18

Yes, we did! At 2.5 months. Get a 5l tupperware with a clippy lid and Milton tablets to serilise. Separate washing up bowl and brush for the bottles. As long as you have the facilities to boil water, you will be fine. Well done and enjoy your trip!

Ah just seen Airbnb update. Also a good choice Smile
