Vango or Coleman

Hi, my husband has seen 2 tents and doesn't know which one to get if anyone can offer any advice. It's between the Vango Padstow 500 or the Coleman Mosedale 5. Both seem similar prices to us. It would be me, my husband, 2 children (currently 3 and 1) and a dog. Looking at weeks away as well as weekend trips. I like the fact we can get the extension for the Coleman.

Following because I have also looked at the exact same!
In context Ive had Vango before and found them long lasting but things always change!

I think they are small. We have two kids (3 & 5) and we need a lot more inside space.

NotMeNoNo · 06/07/2020 20:53

They are both good brands. I would prefer the canopy of the Vango, it will keep the living area dry and give you somewhere to cook/leave shoes etc. But I would look for something with another couple of feet of inside space, you need room to all sit inside if weather hideous. Better to get a big enough tent rather than rely on an extension.

Unless you all want to sleep on top of each other I'd suggest an eight man tent with that many!

NotMeNoNo · 06/07/2020 20:56

Vango Avington 500 XL for example.

Another vote for the Vango. We are in the process of replacing our Vango that has a front like the Coleman for one with a porch. Whenever it’s wet you can’t help but track water inside. Also we are looking at being able to leave our cooker and the like in the porch.

We also tried an extension and to be honest they’re not worth the faff. Better to get a tent that works inside. A gazebo might also be useful.

For half a second I thought this was going to be a baby name thread

You see with the porch one, you can leave the door open even if its raining and not feel shut in. With the sloping front every time you open it water will be dumped into the inner tent. I don't want to sound rain obsessed, but any tent is fine in nice weather!

Don't get one with a sloping front. We've had a Vango 4 man tent for about 8yrs for two adults and two children. It's got a sloping front and I HATE it. We bought an extension a couple of years ago but it hasn't really helped so we're now looking for one that's longer so has a decent amount of "living" space plus a porch area.

You want a tent where you can fit a table and chairs into the front area and have the door open but stay dry when it's raining, because it will rain!

We're also going to get a Coleman event shelter. But we (though not this year) camp as our main holiday so spend 2-3 weeks in the tent so it needs to be comfy Smile

Vango if it's a boy, Coleman if a girl

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 07/07/2020 00:31

Vango, definitely. Get one that's a little longer though, the padstow will be too small for 4.

The Avington is an excellent tent.

A big thumbs up for the Coleman event shelter. We bought one as we often camp with friends (10+) and it has plenty of space for everyone. If you add a pair of side walls it provides great shelter from rain and wind. And despite being quite heavy to move, I can put the whole thing up on my own (I'm 5'3) in about 10 minutes (now I've got the hang of it - the first time involved a lot of head scratching!).

I would think they are both a bit small for that many. We have the Vango Rome 550xl and love it

Mumtumwobble · 05/08/2020 20:31

We’ve got the Mosedale 5 and my kids are 7 & 4. We all sleep at the back together because the kids wouldn’t want to be separate from us and it suits us too. But we do have the front porch extension too. This gives loads more room and makes the tent really quite spacious. We have plenty of space for a week away.
