Does a door alarm for a big tent exist?

Hello - we have two small kids who still wander about a bit in the night if they wake and need a wee. Has anyone heard of a motion sensor alarm that you can just hang off, or stick to, a yurt door to wake us all up if one of them tries to nip out during the night?

I’ve done some googling but I’m really looking for the simplest, battery operated one.

Any recommendations for camping/caravanning etc?

Thanks!

There are alarms you can get for bags that may fit work, but I'd be concerned about waking the entire campsite with the noise.

When my mother started to wander in the night due to deteriorating health, my father got some large bells and attached them to the door knobs.

Loud enough to make noise, but wouldn't cause the rest of the site to wake.

I was going to suggest bells too.

Like this, could tie to the zip

You could get a rape alarm and tie it across the zip so the pin pulls out and sets it off when it's opened. I used to do this on my door when I was in halls of residence so no-one could get in without waking me.

Can't you just put the tent zips to the top of the tent out of their reach? Or put some luggage in the way so the kids can't easily get to the zips in the dark?

Please don't put an alarm on it unless you want to wake the entire campsite....

Something like a rape alarm wouldn't just wake the campsite, it would terrify your kids. Those things are loud.

Thanks - yes bells could work. I hadn’t thought of that. It’s a yurt we are staying in and it has a thin, basic wooden door with no lock. Not sure what the handle is like, but presumably easy to open.
I would like to get something we can use on our own big family Belltent in the future too though for security as well as wandering toddlers...

Thanks all!

If it is a wooden door, you can get door stop wedges that sound an alarm if you try to open the door. People sometimes use them in hotel rooms.

RomaineCalm · 30/06/2020 20:59

Please be thoughtful if you get an alarm as you risk waking up the entire campsite. What may not sound particularly loud at home could be very loud across a quiet campsite at night.

Could either you or DH sleep across the doorway so that DC can't wander? Or put a bag/camping chair across the entrance instead?

Whatapickle78 · 30/06/2020 21:49

Yes agree RE noise. The thing is, it’s highly unlikely to happen that either kid will go outside without one of us or an intruder will try to come in - but even knowing this, I just know DP and will really struggle to sleep for worrying about it.

I think the best option could just be bells, or indeed a doorstop (without alarm) wedged under the door. Or a quiet(er) alarm model given it’s unlikely to be going off unless it’s an emergency

Thanks so much for the suggestions everybody Flowers

A door stop is a good idea if the door opens inwards.

If outwards tie a couple of plastic mugs on a length of string, tie to door handle, balance mugs on one of your crates or boxes. They will crash down if the door opens.

Any kind of alarm will be bound to be set off accidentally and everyone will hate you.
