Campsite between Dordogne and Calais

So, Brittany Ferries have cancelled our ferry from Santander to Portsmouth. We had planned to spend a few days in the Loire Valley, then move onto the Dordogne then the Basque region then get the ferry back from Spain. As this is no longer possible, we've booked Eurotunnel for the journey back. We're looking for a campsite between Sarlat and Calais, caravan, 2 teenagers, pool but not bothered about entertainment but near some nice towns for drinks in the evening....can anyone suggest anywhere??

Chateau des Marais is pretty and has enough for the teenagers. It’s within an easy walk of a small town called Mer where there are a few restaurants, cafes and bars.

We always stay at Huttopia Saumur for our stop over.

fuschia2000 · 25/06/2020 11:53

Or huttopia Versailles?

NCTDN · 28/06/2020 08:31

I was going to suggest Versailles as well as the most direct route is through Paris. That's the way we've been to the dordogne. What site are you staying at?

NCTDN · 28/06/2020 08:32

And where are you in the Loire?

Thanks! We've booked onto a site in Amboise, really looking forward to going again now!!

Ooh which one op?

If it is open, you could head toward the Guedelon castle which make a nice detour for something to visit. We stayed at Bois Guillaume but it isn't near any towns, although the onsite restaurant was very good- catering for a lot of French style meals rather than just frites, pizzas etc. To get there, we went through a town called Gien, which looked lovely, a bit nearer to the roads to Sarlet and had a campsite near to town, it looks very similar to Amboise!

Sounds lovely! It will be interesting to see how many attractions are open, although we're not really bothered - we're happy to do lots of cycling and walking. We've booked the municipal campsite in Amboise. The teens love being able to go off for a wander around the town on their own and this campsite is on an island a 10 minute walk from the centre of town, so it's perfect. Not huge amenities but thankfully we're beyond needing playgrounds etc! We've booked the Il de Re for the way down and extended the stay in the Dordogne which will hopefully make up for missing out on the Basque part of the holiday.

I was just going to suggest Amboise, we have stayed there and it is a lovely site, basic but adequate facilities and the beautiful town just a quick walk over the bridge.
There is a good area of parkland to walk around, with a gym trail, on the island next to the site.

Surrounded by lots of amazing chateaux as well!

NCTDN · 29/06/2020 19:26

Where in the dordogne are you staying?

Schooltripping · 29/06/2020 20:19

www.campinglecapeyrou.com/ Camping Capeyrou in Baynac....it looks beautiful!
