France camping next month?

We still have our pre-lockdown campsite booking for south of France - August - any thoughts on whether this will be able to happen?!

I think it will.

I am expecting to be in France mid-July and all the signs seem to be going that way. There are no distance restrictions for travelling in France already. It is just a question of getting there.

Presumably the campsite is open?

We're just about to cancel our week at the end of July. FCO advice is still no non-essential travel which means our insurance won't be valid if we decide to travel against advice. I think FCO advice may well change but we don't want to take the risk in case it doesn't so cancelling now so we don't lose all our money.

Probably, but IMHO the two outstanding issues are:

The "voluntary" 14 day quarantine - will it still apply for arrival in France from the UK, and if so willthe campsite will be OK with accommodating you if you are meant to be self isolating.

Of course if the UK drops it's own quarantine then supposedly the French will drop their reciprocal one and you'll be OK.

Secondly as has been said there's also the issue of the FCO advice, and in my experience their warnings tend to get reduced in severity at a glacial pace.

PersonaNonGarter · 24/06/2020 07:49

The FCO advice will get dropped in line with the governments advice - they are part of the same thing.

It looks as though tourists from 10(?) countries and the UK will be able to holiday reciprocally. The question is when.

All the signs seem to point to 15 July. I intend to travel on 17th of July. I think by August you should be fine.

There’s no way I’d book something for October though. Once the critical holiday season is over I expect the borders to slam shut again.

Thanks for your thoughts.... Yes our campsite is open currently - I think we're going to keep it booked for now and see what happens - fingers crossed not a second wave of covid19 before end July/ August - we wouldn't do a hotel stopover on the way down/ back but would do a one night camp stop with a pop-up tent and all squeeze in!

By chance this morning I've just had an-email from a local'ish to us French campsite I've used in the past reminding me they are open for business.

"Sous un parasol ou au zénith, en bord de mer ou de rivière, en mode farniente ou sport extrême, votre été approche à grands pas ! C’est l’occasion parfaite pour organiser vos vacances de rêves et s’évader au camping !"

It's already happening - certainly some second homers are (quite legitimately) already taking breaks down here in southern France..however sadly some are displaying a bit of a reluctance to even attempt to appear to play the voluntary quarantine game, which isn't going down well......

Wallywobbles · 24/06/2020 13:43

I live in France - we have a rental beach house in Normandy where we are currently spending the month, with kids, dogs and horses. No difference from last year. Everything is open. Nightclubs are opening now too. Some of the kids mates are staying at the local campsite. Really your only issue is whether you have to go back into quarantine on returning to the UK.

teaandbiscuitsforme · 24/06/2020 17:09

Persona Can you link where there is talk of the changing FCO advice on the 15th July?

Spaghettio · 24/06/2020 17:24

We've got six days booked for end of July/beginning of August. We're staying in a self catering apartment. Do you think we'll need to self quarantine for that time? Not really worth going if we'll just be stuck in an apartment!

Wallywobbles · 24/06/2020 23:26

My understanding is that's it's optional. Not checked though.

So yes, it's voluntary but as I mentioned upthread some of the locals do get quite upset if visiting Brits are seen to be blatantly ignoring the "polite request".

Anyhow as it stands since it's a reciprocal arrangement so when/if the UK drops it's quarantine the French will drop their voluntary version.

Spaghettio · 25/06/2020 12:32

Thanks - I'm still in two minds, so I guess we'll just wait and see if they change the guidance.

I asked a local restaurant owner yesterday on the back of this thread. Local feeling here (Normandy) is come, spend and enjoy. No ones going to be unhappy about it here.
