Would I be getting my hopes up too much to book a campsite late July?

Our favourite campsite in Wales is taking bookings from 4 July.

We're all desperate to go - somewhere - anywhere.

How realistic is it, do you think, to book for later than month?

@CMOTdibbler, the shower arrived this week and I have tried it out albeit in the normal shower! I am quite impressed, it's not the same as a mains shower WRT power but I felt clean enough afterwards. It packs down very well, we had considered some pressure style showers, but they seemed much more bulky. I was slightly surprised how much water it used, I reckon I got through @10l of water for a 3 minute shower, so it's definitely more of a practical thing, rather than a 'ooh, let's just push the button one more time thing'...and appreciate the shoulder massage. But, if it means we camp this summer then I am very happy.

It's a neat bit of kit and well designed. Incidentally, I also bought their tapped water carrier at the same time, and although that was eyewateringingly pricey, both DH and I have been blown away by the design detail.

The charge is supposed to last 45 minutes, so that should be 15 showers, but that's our next thing to test...

Do you put warm water into the bucket or does it heat it?

CMOTDibbler · 05/06/2020 08:40

@profpoopsnagle its never going to be a luxury shower, but as you say, its a practical getting clean thing isn't it. DH has ordered the Collapz water carrier as he really liked the design detail.

@NCTDN, you need to put warm water in the bucket. An experiment the other day with the clear water carrier I have already meant that 2 hours with 12l of water left in the sun was warm enough to shower off with. The overall plan is if it is warm to leave containers in direct sunlight and to fill the flasks with boiling water ahead so we can top up to usable temp

profpoopsnagle · 05/06/2020 10:30

@NCTDN I was going to do the same- leave the bucket of water to warm in the day, possibly with a black bin liner on to help and then just touch up with a kettle of hot if needed. DH likes to shower in the morning, so that may take more, we'll have to experiment.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 05/06/2020 10:53

@profpoopsnagle this is going to sound like a daft question, but where are you planning on putting the shower tent? And more importantly, your towel? I also wonder how people deal with the pop up tent getting a very wet floor. Probably something obvious that I am missing!

CMOTDibbler · 05/06/2020 11:04

I'm getting a shower tent with no floor, but am planning on standing in a [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tubtrugs-Shallow-Flexible-2-Handled-Recycled/dp/B000UJUS8K?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 shallow tubtrug). Towel has a clip to hang up, and I have a moon mat anyway from outdoor swimming to stand on for changing, but I'll just do that in the tent and put my towelling dry robe on for to and from the shower tent

profpoopsnagle · 05/06/2020 12:20

My shower tent has a mesh perimeter, so that you can stand on a groundsheet and keep feet clean but the water can also drain. I/m going to get a cheap paddling pool anyway, as I think it will protect the ground a lot more if most of the water goes into that.

Not sure yet on the towel, might well be a carrier bag job like normal campsite showers. [[https://www.zempire.co.uk/pocket-rocket
This tent]] has an innovative towel feature.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 05/06/2020 18:40

Thank you, shall investigate.

Schmoana · 08/06/2020 08:50

Not sure why wash facilities are considered such high risk? If they limit numbers in at one time, keep windows open, clean regularly. Surely if the last thing you do when you come out is wash your hands, it’s low risk? I’m desperate to go on the trips I’ve booked!

OneForMeToo · 09/06/2020 19:23

I’ve just booked an August local camp. I’m going to order a camping toilet and shower to protest to my self sufficiency should I need too. I wouldn’t be going too far away however but outside the house would me amazing 😅

hillbilly · 10/06/2020 01:20

We have booked for mid July at a small campsite in Norfolk. The pitches are in individual clearings do not cheek by jowl with other tents. They have installed extra facilities (used to be one loo and one compost loo). Can't wait 😀

NettleTea · 10/06/2020 10:44

we have opened our glamping site, as each unit has its own toilet and water supply and washing up area, but we are keeping our camping closed this year because even though we only allow 12 pitches, I simply dont feel we can keep the toilets / shared water safe enough

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/06/2020 10:51

We have camping booked in August (a tent pitch and a pod cabin for 2 people). We are hopeful, but fully expect it to be cancelled. DH also told me we might get an offer from relatives with a caravan site who were on a planned, non Covid closure year for construction but have a small part safe for friends and family.

redeyetonowheregood · 18/06/2020 21:24

@hillbilly is that The Brickyard? If so, that is where we had our first ever camping experience 🙂 we are hoping to get to Breck farm in the summer.

hillbilly · 19/06/2020 00:33

@redeyetonowheregood good guess yes it is! Been to Breck Farm a couple of times too 😀

OneForMeToo · 22/06/2020 18:13

We are booked into breckfarm this summer. Was meant to be Dorset but I don’t fancy somewhere new with all this going on. I’ve stayed on kellingheath next door loads and break farm a couple of time.

Chickenqueen · 22/06/2020 22:49

Just booked a camping holiday to Norfolk for the 24th July! They will refund/move dates if anything changes so why not. Looking into a portable shower....

Normalmumandwife · 23/06/2020 08:22

I would have said go for it...but the report in today's Times is saying that campsites WONT be opened due to the use of shared facilities. That means at the earliest (if correct) it will be 25.7.

Lots of disappointed people as campsite bookings are now rammed for July...I know as we booked

NettleTea · 23/06/2020 10:16

yes, this is why we have taken the decision not to open. We only have 12 pitchesin one area and 4 in another, its really rural and back to nature, but we cant risk it because of the shared toilets and water stands. We have built a new toilet and water pipe/wash area at the glampingsite so that everyone has their own facilities and Im even going as far as refusing bookings from 2 families wanting to come together if they wont/cant book the 2 units that are next to each other - people want to feel safe and the last thing you need is the traffic of a group booking going backwards and forwards across your supposed 'safe space'

we have had to make lots of changes. Guests bring own bedding, buying extra sets of mattress protectors, non contact check ins. I cant run any courses as my 20 year old is in the shielding group - people need to bring their own cooking/dining stuff as we are off grid and cant do the 'hottest wash in a dishwasher' routine between guests. We have had to remove any extraneous items too, so it looks a bit basic. When you see the guidelines its quite demanding. Also there is a section on if the previous guest has covid - but how would you know? We have to assume everyone has it and clean accordingly.

Chickenqueen · 23/06/2020 16:50

So its ok then!?

NettleTea · 23/06/2020 18:29

It would appear that way, so long as the business can stick to the social distancing and cleaning guidelines
