Sleeping bags

8 year old Dd has her first Brownie camp in a couple of weeks - they're staying in a dormitory, but the kit list includes a sleeping bag.

I've seen cheap ones (£9.99) but I'd rather think sustainable and get something that might be useful when she's older and might want to go proper camping, or backpacking or something.

I'm totally clueless and there seems to be such a wide range of prices and brands. I'm assuming folding up small and being reasonably warm are things to aspire to, but I'd really appreciate advice from people who actually use sleeping bags themselves!
What should I be looking for, what is good value, and likely to last well?

Vaude sleeping bags claim to have good eco credentials, but I'm not sure about any other companies. If Vaude ones are a bit pricey, Vango ones seem reasonable. Decide whether you want 1, 2, or 3 season - I'd suggest getting 2 or 3 as they would also potentially be useful for camping later. Vango do a kids sleeping bag that has a removable section at the bottom for when they're littler.

And yes, definitely beware cheapey ones on Amazon etc. I bought my son a cheap 2 season one, and it's much thinner than his Vango 2 season one.

Tip from a Cub leader... Get your DD to practice putting the sleeping bag back in its bag before she goes away. It might seem obvious to an adult, but not always to a tired kid

(And get her to help pack so she knows where everything is and what it looks like)

Decathlon is a great shop for good priced camping and activity stuff.
I think £10 is probably too cheap and would be a bit rubbish. A decent one can be bought for maybe £25-30 if you don't want to spend too much.
Could you borrow one from someone? (make sure she likes camping with Brownies first!)

Mumdiva99 · 20/10/2019 20:15

I'd get a vango one. I bought my kids them in decathlon - although if you have a Go Outdoors nearby you might find you get a discount with them - Scout and DofE do...so worth an ask.
I personally like a 3 season bag - but my kids have 2 season ones and find them warm enough. I wouldn't have bought the cheapest but equally didn't spend loads.

Vango Cadair Mummy Sleeping Bag, Atlantic Blue, Single www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00H5IW2R4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_UjlRDbXX98GE8?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I have one of these and can vouch that it's warm enough comfy and easy to pack again. Reasonably priced too

I wouldn't spend a fortune to be honest & indoor sleeping is different to camping in tents.

I bought cheap ones when my kids started & they still use those for indoor sleeping. We have better ones for tent camping

I don't recommend getting a decent sleeping bag for sleeping in a dorm. Chances are the dorm will be warm, and a decent outdoor sleeping bag is not designed to be used in a heated environment. Get a cheap £10 bag and then a separate decent bag if she ever goes camping.
